Anyone use Epsom Salt??

Saint Petersburg, FL

I was wondering if anyone uses Epsom Salt as a additive when watering your Bromeliads?? If so what kind of results have you seen??

Tomatoes yes - Bromeliads ?
Never heard of anyone adding Epsom Salts - magnesium, while needed, is generally not a critical element for Bromeliads.
I'd just stick to something conventional with trace elements - a frequent but very dilute application of fertilizer is what mother nature provides...

Dave - hi there!! Your plants are doing great btw from way back...hope the dyckias I sent are doing as well - probably better in your capable care...loved their color but ouch!!! What do you suggest to dilute for watering? Would Superthrive be acceptable and how much do you dilute it - how often use it etc.
Thanks much!

Hi Chantell - The Dyckias are quite happy - they don't mind the bleak, cool winter days and nights.

I fertilize monthly (except December-February) with Grow More Bromeliad Fertilizer 17-8-22, not because of the name but because its formula is like that recommended by Herb Plever, a great grower and friend of mine from New York. In December I put about 1/4-1/2 tsp of 10-10-10 (?) Osmocote in all the pots - more for bigs pots, less for small pots.

I do confess to using Superthrive akthough I don't know if it really works (just a few drops per 2 gallons).

Think Spring!

Epsom Salt, in generous amount, does wonders for Coconut Trees.

Louisville, KY

Epsom salt made my tomatoes grow 10ft! My neighbors were in awe!! I use it in my vegetable garden and 1/2 the amount on my roses!!! It does great!! I don't know how it would react to Bromelaids..
