Hi all!!
I just got done reading a fantastic book, Bringing Light to Shadow, by Pamela Dennison. I don't typically post book reviews, but I have found this story truly inspirational and feel like I need to let other people know about it. Pam is a seasoned dog trainer who adopted a young and human/dog aggressive Border Collie. This is her journal of their work together using positive reinforcement only to change his behaviors.
I recommend the book highly; it has given me lots of ideas for working with my dogs, who are not aggressive, per se. What she writes about reinforcement of behaviors and operant conditioning can be applied to all dogs in all situations. You just need to be able to break the response you're trying to modify into small enough parts that you can then reliably and consistently reinforce them. And knowing your dog's body language and signals will help you to assess your affectiveness and to keep your training/reinforcement sessions the appropriate length to be successful.
The appendices at the back of the book contain a wealth of information about books, videos, websites, email lists, etc. for anyone interested in better knowing and better working with their dog.
The book is published by Dogwise Publishing - http://www.dogwise.com/AuthPub/index.cfm
And, for those of you fortunate enough to live near her, here's Pam's site - http://www.positivedogs.com/
Enjoy!!
