I was walking in downtown Redmond, WA the other morning just after sunrise and spotted something the size of a large cat sitting in a small grassy knoll about 30 feet away from me. I stopped and took a closer look and saw that it was a large bird of prey, brown and white, with a flat top to its head and a beak like an eagle's. It was sitting on something recently captured, the white feathers surrounding it suggested that it had caught a sea gull.
This was definitely too big to be a hawk - it looked as though it was probably 12-14 lbs. Redmond is located along a slough with lots of natural areas, so there is lots of bird life in and around it. Could it have been a young eagle?
Anyway, what a sight. I wanted to stop traffic and get people to take a look. That's not something you see every day. And this guy was not about to fly off for just anybody . . .
Young eagle? Wish I had a picture
