Ok, come on you know you're bored with winter and thinking spring already. I want to know who is incubating and what...
I fired up the bators and plan to set eggs tonight. These are the eggs going in.
***Assorted marans (assorted Marans eggs ~Black Copper, Golden Cuckoo, Black with Black Birchen Rooster and Blue with Blue Birchen rooster)
***Blue Rocks
***A couple buff orp's and from the same breeder black, blue, splash and mottled orpingtons
***I bought a batch on ebay wellsummer, barnevelders and cuckoo maran assorted .
***And for giggles I slipped 5 banty eggs under a broody silkie. I brought her into the house and swapped out the golf balls for eggs. I had two other silkie gals that just ended being broody... spent over a month trying to hatch those golf balls...lol.
I will probably toss in a couple of my other eggs from the flock if not this time around then next.
So what are you hatching ?????

Speak Up !!
I am jealous, where did you get the Black Copper marans? I have two silkies and one marans on the banty eggs, not sure what I will end up with, I got silver and golden sebrights, a rainbow of silkies and a maran rooster, Marshall, who LOVES all the girls!
Good luck!
Since my little farm includes only those related to each other...I have eggs from my chickens only. My roo is a Buff Orpinton (the most beautiful I have ever seen). I have eggs in the bator from my Rhode Island red (I think 2) a Red SexLink, a Black Sexlink, and a hen that we call 'Mop Top' we have NO IDEA what she is! Maybe I will post a picture tonight and we can see if anyone else has seen anything like her.
I am excited to see what our 'mixed' race chicks will look like!
I found a Rouen duck egg under one of my silkies this morning. She can hardly stand it, she's so excited. We'll see what she ends up with tomorrow. It's way too early for me to deal with the thought of chicks.
Silkies broodiness is catchy!!!! I think I want a baby! OM someone talk me down!!!
Baby chickens are grown and gone in a couple of months. Children hang around forever and just when you think they're finially on their own and you turn their room into a sewing room....they move back home with a wife, a dog or both. Go sit on a golf ball for a while till the feeling passes.
Raising children is like being pecked to death by chickens.
Pecked to death by chickens? So a long painful death..........No way I am going that way! OM No kids for me! Thanks!
Chickies don't talk back or tell you they hate you. Complete unconditional love.
yeah, and chickens don't chase the geese around with a stick LOL
our duck hatched out one Buckeye chick 7 weeks ago. we hatched only one from our incubator, a Buckeye/Leghorn cross, [Buckhorn?]
i'll be settin gsome more eggs soon! and i will be more careful with the humidity the last few days...

I bought my set of assorted marans on eggbid. It's a mixture of whatever is laid those days. I like the looks of the gold marans and that was what I was shooting for. I paid for 12 eggs, he sent me 15.
1-black copper (I saw a recent auction for 6 0f these sell for $106.00.) and a breed quoted me a price of $70 for a dozen.
6-blues
5- blacks
3-gold
I am on several waiting lists with breeders for the spring. My buying will depend on their availabilty and how well my incubator hatches go. Since I'm not going into a breeding program all I want is a couple extra dark layers for the backyard flock.
I will say the eggs he sent, some were exceptionally large. The guy who sent me the assortment of dark layers (barnevelder, wellsummer, maran) sent large eggs as well.
My orpington assortment I got at a GREAT price. I think 28 for what she normally charges for a dozen.
4- buffs
3- blue
5-black
3-splash
5-mottled (which is my goal for this batch !!)
and several unlabeled.
Julie
So I'm happy for the moment....lol. Keeps me busy during the winter.
she is so cute! where is her comb, seeing that would help, or does she have a pom on her head? i was thinking an OEG mix or BB RIR, how small is she?
tf
She is a cutie! No clue what she is though! jab91864 is it too cold to ship eggs? I saw some great ones on Eggbid.
Her comb come out along her beak a little...but not on top of her head. She is a fairly small hen...about the size of my smallest RIR. She is several years old, and has quite the attitude. She lays very small, sometimes round, creamy while eggs...but they are the BEST! Her eggs have more flavor then any of our chickens, and he yolks stand taller as well.
One trait she has is that she comes out in the morning with the other girls...but goes back in by herself and perches very early in the evening. She can normally be found inside about 2 hours before the rest of our flock.
What is an OEG?
When I waited and had eggs shipped in March last year it was actually colder than it is now. I never had any break due to freezing.
The majority of ppl who send eggs wrap them sooooo well it helps to insulate. Most will not ship out other than Mon, Tues and Wed. My mail lady brings them to my house and last year when I wasn't going to be home during the day I forewarned her to please leave my boxes in a sleeping bag in the cab of the old pick up in the drive.
If it's not single digits or below I would do it.
What kind are you looking at ??
I figure if I start early they will be laying by summer instead of fall and it gives me a chance to make changes to the flock before fall....meaning if I decide I need to cut back etc... lol, like we see that happening soon.

I was looking at the different Marans, Wheaton, black copper and birchen. I have to do some searching for pics. Those marans eggs that went for $106 were on ebay right? Those were the darkest eggs I have ever seen.
Ok I really like GOLD AND SILVER APPENZELLER SPITZHAUBEN (copy and pasted easier than spelling it) Those are some nice looking birds.
Yep, they were on ebay. I saw some dark dark ones on byc. a gal named mothergoose sells them. She has a waiting list...lol.
I agree the Appenzellers are very nice. I really like the head dress look they have going on...lol

OEg is old english game, excuse my lazy typing LOL you might do a search on thta, i understand there are a lot of them, particularly in bantam size. my OEG are called Blue Wheatens, and they are incredibly small, smaller than the wild quail we used to have...
mine lay small creamy colored eggs, and have almost no comb... i took pictures the other day, no just need to find that cable so i can upload them.
her going in early is to me a sign of a mediterranean class game bird, at leasst my RC Brown Leghorns do that. what color are her ear lobes, cream or white? or red?
i am going to buy some six month old free-range Black Australorps from a breeder near here. we lost so many birds that we need to do a little catch up before all my egg customers go back to store bought for good ;-)
I did look up OEG after I asked what it was. I think she does resemble a few of them, but I couldnt find any with the featers on the head like her. She must be crossed with something else. Either way I am looking forward to incubating a few eggs from her.
She has polish or silkey in her
she's a crested cross
Yeah...I saw a silkey once that has the feathers on top that resembled hers. I tried to see what color the ear lopes are...but she has too many feathers to tell. Even after dark...she is the only one that will still defend herself...everyone else just acts like they are blind.
We just got another foot of snow here today. Lora and I will just have to keep waiting until spring, sigh.
Another foot? GEEZ! I am so sick and tired of the snow, and cold! I am ready for the warm weather, green grass, and birds chirping!
you got it! warm weather [dang it' shot!] green grass [got to mow!] and birds making noises everywhere!
so, did everybody get the chicks they wished for? the chicken fairy wants to know if all the chick slaves are happy with their wishes...
Speckled Sussex?--Chicken Fairy how many teeth do I have to lose to get a Speckled Sussex? I will be good, I will be good, I will be good.....
hmm, hoe about a root canal?
Yes Chicken Fairy, I had a root canal! Now where is my Speckled Sussex pullet?
(What is the penalty for lying to the Chicken Fairy?)
taking two of your roos... plus drop ship three dozen penedesenca eggs [partidge and crele] ASAP...
How about I buy three dozen, ship two dozen and "take care of" the others?
...
My problem is that the Chicken Fairsy delivered every single thing I wanted, but forgot to fly in the new chicken houses for tham as they got older. Does anyone know how to get a hold of her. She should know better then to fulfill wishes without provoding chicken shelters. After I get back form working on the new pens I think I am going to send her a huffy e-mail.
Sheila
send it to her DH!
LOL....chicken fairy, huh? Oh my, all the chicken wishes I can now wish up!! : )
I'd be careful ladybugs, the Chicken Fairy has been fairly grumpy lately and you have to give her a tooth for every wish.
thanks for the warning........would it have to be mine?
I'm not sure--I haven't seen the contract!
lookin for a loophole........
:0)
