Hoyas: latifolias,new hoyas,addictive personalities -#4

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

So I changed my set-up AGAIN. Sara's "pressure" (hehe) of adding new hoyas due to my "space potential" has been in the back of my mind since the first thread - so thanks Sara :)

I changed my little "hoya corner" in my living room because I found the cutest bamboo plant stands. It's a set of 2 (1 big one and 1 smaller one in front). So I moved my bigger plant table to my bedroom - which is now nicknamed the HOYA JUNGLE. Of course I also have plant stands and random hoyas in many different places in my apartment, but I just love these bulk hoya areas.

Here are some pics. Sara, I just KNOW you'll be proud!!

Here's the living room plant corner (the new bamboo stands - don't worry, more hoyas will be squeezed in eventually)...

Here's pic #1 of my bedroom hoya jungle. I removed my rocking chair and replaced it with the table that used to be in the living room corner (the rocking chair was taking up ample hoya space!). I also added more hanging plants. And I added a little plant light above the "new" hoya table...seems to be helping with growth over the winter.

And here's another view of the bedroom hoya jungle. Anyone else have new set-ups??

Love your hoya areas! Looks great! Really love those bamboo plant stands too, would love to find a couple of those! They make a nice display! I could do them in a stair step configuration .... take one of the taller ones, cut the legs just a bit shorter so it would be lower than the first, then have the third smaller one in front.

Going googling for bamboo stands now!

Thanks for sharing your photo's!

Thanks Lin :)
I actually bought the stands on Ebay, and they were shipped REALLY fast. I paid $34.95 (Buy It Now..not an auction) for the set of 2, and the shipping was $44.94 UPS ground. Let me know if you want me to contact the seller to find out how to get more. There were 9 sets available, but I can't seem to find them. I know she still has some though. She also has these really nice plant stands that match the ones above, but they each hold 1 plant. I think it would look so nice with all 4 pieces! I am contemplating getting them (it's a set of 2 - one big, one smaller), but I think the "corner" looks great now and I don't want to get all crazy *just yet*!

Gabi - that looks beautiful - all your hoyas look so pretty and healthy - thanks for sharing!!

Gabi, your plants look gorgeous and you have displayed them beautifully! I'm not sure whether I should be embarrassed or not.... but please understand that these guys are in their "Winter Digs" only until it is warm enough for them to go back outside and play. The two big shelves are in my bedroom and the third is in the kitchen. We have already had temps down to 8°, so in they came!

I'm loving the pic's of y'alls plants! If I ever get my spring cleaning done and get organized I will take a couple of photo's to post!

Gabi...your plants look so healthy and lush... You, too, Barb!!! I am really impressed with how you all do so WELL growing plants indoors! NO ONE could ever tell you lived in ....uh....inhospitable climes!!!!

Gabbi and Barb, great looking plants and wonderful setups! It is funny how we are always tinkering trying to fit in the most plants and have them look their best. I know that is what I do most weekends - this one starting tomorrow included.

Doug

Lovely plants Gabi and Barb, and I just love your set ups. I found myself trying to identify them all ... Thanks for sharing.

Gabi, everything looks awesome!! Gotta dash, was just checking in before work, but I love the bamboo plant stands, and really love the clustering in your hoya jungle.

I have re-arranged and hung several plants, now that I am forced to use vertical space, but everything is pretty much stable at my house.

Gabi: Thanks so much for the offer of contacting the e-bay seller regarding those beautiful stands but I think I will pass for now. The price of $34.95 for the two is a great deal but that shipping is just way to high for my pocketbook right now. I do love them though! I will be on the lookout at some local wicker places that sometimes have bamboo stuff too, and maybe I will find something similar.

Your plants all look so great! What direction does your windows face? I'm in the process of re-arranging and getting organized and thinking of putting all hoya's together in one spot and all gesneriads together in one spot ... I have so many plants and they are scattered all over the house. I have two east facing windows, in two different rooms and am thinking of putting all hoya's in one. Just curious as to the location of everyone's plants.

Lin,

I don't know if you have a Christmas Tree Shop in you area, but that is a good place to keep your eye open for that kind of thing. I picked up some great 5 foot bamboo benches last year for $17 each that I use for plant stands outside. It seems like every year they get in a bunch of differnent bamboo products. I think a good time to look would be from early March onward. Bamboo and plants just seem to go together.

Christmas Tree Shop?? Nope, never heard of it. We had a GREAT store here on the beach called The Christmas Hut that was open year round, a really neat store selling artificial trees and all types of ornaments and Christmas decorations, but they just closed a year ago after being in town for many, many years. :(

Your hoyas look beautiful, too, Barb!! I always love seeing how people display their hoyas!

I watn to know how Lin gets her name to print in green????

(Zone 1)

huh? It's blue on my screen! ... have to say though, I'm green with envy at some of y'alls plants!

Aha ... I figured it out - if you are on any thread and click on that person's name and go to their home page and then go back to the thread you were on that name will show up in green!

Well now, I just tested it on your name Carol ... went to your home page and right back here ... at first it showed up in red but changed to green! :) Is DG in Christmas mode? Red & Green? Ok, tried it on kabob's name ... same thing ... come back and it's red for just a sec and then green!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks everyone :)

Lin, all my windows face east. That's the direction I'd choose anyway, so I lucked out!

Yes Carol - if you click on someone's name to go to their page, then when you see their name on a post it will be in green. Strange, huh?

Love everyone's set-ups! Always gives me incentive and ideas for myself

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Interesting Lin...thanks for that explanation.

I posted some photos of plants in our garden on the Tropical Gardening forum http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/803546/

There are also lots of others with photos of their tropicals: Tropicman, Braveheartsmom and rjuddharrison. All have gardens to die for!!!

Carol

I think this fits under addictive personalities, in a bit of an obscure way. The sun was streaming in the window, and the shadow on the wall,10 feet from the window, totally blew me away, so I knew I just had to share it. The plant is a carnosa.

I did a bunch of repotting and rearranging over the weekend. This is a picture of my plant room now.

One More. I finally figured out how to make the room warm up. When I close the door most of the way, I can get it up to around 75 from the heat given off by the lights.

This room is finally starting to feel like a real "greenhouse." I think anyone can convert an unused room into a plant room if they want to pay for the electricity. This room is costing me around $60.00 a month right now, but hey it's cheaper than going to the bars!

Very nice, Doug! Looking out that window into the frigid cold, it bet you were glad to be able to piddle with plants in a balmy 75°. Your Hoya look great and the room does, too.

Barb

Doug - Very nice set up! Your plants look so lush and healthy. I bet you have hours of fun in there playing plants!!

Karen

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Nice "greenhouse" Doug! I wish I had a spare room that I could turn into a greenhouse. And 60 bucks a month is definitely worth it. Oh, and I love the way you display your plants...you seem very neat and organized. Thanks for sharing.

Gabi

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Really nice, Doug...and your plants DO look plump and happy!!!

I loved every post on this thread. Thanks for the pictures and the fun!

PS My front screened in porch with 6 mil poly wrapped around is not as tidy as all of you, but the plants are happy in the month of January so far.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Yes, I am having a lot of fun with the room, and it seems like every week I learn something new. I guess I have my cats to thank for some of my recent growth spurts. If they hadn't started chowing down on some of the leaves, I wouldn't have locked them out of the room by closing the door and realizing that I can use that as a mechanism to help control the climate. With the increased temperature, I can almost see them growing. I just have to pay attention and strike a balance between just right, and water condensing and running down the walls from too much humidity.

Doug
