hoya linearis care?

Pittsburgh, PA

I just won a small h. linearis in a fair fight on ebay (ta-da!) and was wondering what you guys think about this hoya? I did read what I could find about it and it sounds like it's somewhat like h. bella in care---cool, moist, bright light...does that sound right? Also, what about ease of flowering here in the chilly northeast? Any scent to the flowers? Thanks for any info or experiences...

Shelly, this post/thread may be of some help. I passed one up in WalMart last night and it has haunted me ever since! I'll be back after work this evening to get it, in spite of predicted severe weather.....

Here's the link to info in Plant files for H. linearis: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57781/ It doesn't mention fragrance. Nice looking hoya though!

I have killed more H. linearis than most grownups....From what I can tell it likes ALOT of warm, likes to stay dryish and likes bright indirect sunlight. I did have one live for a month when I ignored it growing in bright light...

Some relationships were not meant to happen!!!!

Thanks Barb and Plantladylin, that link DID help....I'm trying a bright cool east window (since that's all I've got) and we'll see how it goes...

EEEK Carol--I was afraid you'd say something like that...It's such a delicate (okay, feeble) looking plant and I can easily see it poised to dry up and wither away any minute....all I can hope is that the climate is so different between Hawaii and Pennsylvania that maybe it will like Pittsburgh better...or not...

I have a little cutting that I have had OUTSIDE all winter here and it is looking great. No direct sun but very bright light. I think the "warm" factor is not a given as the temps here are quite cool indeed.

SR,

I live near you (in New York), so I know all about that northeast weather! I have successfully kept my linearis since the Summer, and it's doing great (except for a recent attack of mealies, which I just treated with BATS..fingers are crossed!). I keep it right next to an east facing window since that's all I have, but I've found that all my hoyas like eastern exposure. I also water when dry - I remember reading that it doesn't like to stay moist. And of course I keep it in a loose soil mixture, like all of my hoyas.

Hope that helps, and congrats on your win :)

I purchased my plant somewhere around September 12th of 2007. It grows in a gh like all of my hoyas do and it gets very bright indirect light facing NE ,lots of air flow ( fans going from front to back and then again back to front) I water it from the top about once a month and only if it is completely dry. I also mist it once or twice a month.

I fertilize it at every watering using the beer formula. I also use the beer formula for misting this one as well. Something I did do once I actually received the plant was to remove all of the EA soil from the root ball leaving just enough on it to keep it intact while i re potted it into my own soil mixture back into it's original pot. It has been thriving ever since and put on lots of new growth.

Here's a picture of it taken just yesterday.

Neat plant! Can you post a close up shot?

Nice plant, dm!!! Am surprised at how infrequently you water...but then, I am a Jewish-ish mother and tend to feed/water beyond the norm.

My goal in life is to grow H. linearis for more than 4 months and have it attain more than 3" of growth.

Hope springs eternal.

Mine is/are still going strong - I have one at work in a very bright east window that also gets some sun from the south, and one at home in a bright south window.

Neither one has grown much in the 2? years I've had them. They seem to only get one or two sets of leaves per year/per stem. ...so I can surely relate to your desire for them to grow more than 3" (sounds just about right, lol!!) per year, Carol!

I grow mine very dry, and like Marcy, quite cool, especially at night, since both are quite near the windows.
