Plano, TX

how is it different from other iris? i always wonder at that name-----

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I would love to try it for postage, if it would make it in my zone. Zone 5.
Looks like an orchid. Just lovely.
I have had to wrap plants in bubble wrap for protection in the mail from my awful winter weather.
Thanks
Joyce

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

Walking iris would not be hardy here. I was fortunate to get one of the yellow ones in a trade and they have the most interesting little blooms on them and mine seemed to bloom a lot. They are spending the winter inside in pots and seem to be very happy. I would say go for it Joyce!

Fort Myers, FL(Zone 10a)

The "walking" iris "walks"
it will send up a tall strong stem and then have lots of blossoms on it and each blossoms will turn into baby plants.. as they grow they get heavy and the stem falls to the ground and the babies will root them selves so they "walk" they will spread and need lots of space.. I have space for them... just not a lot! lol

Tuckerton, NJ

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Ok, Noell if you have any left I wouldn't mind trying them in pots. They are really pretty.
Let me know, thanks.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7a)

That is so cool! And they are BEAUTIFUL. I would love to have a few if they aren't all taken. I would love to watch the process play out. Are they full sun?
Catherine
Edited to say:
I am new to irises. I got about 15 dwarf bulbs and another 20 Dutch bulbs for Xmas. Just planted them today actually. (It was and sunny here in Atlanta!) I also rescued about 30 of the bearded from being paved over. I'm learning as I go. :-)

HI Noell! Last summer you sent me some Xanths and I wanted to let you know that out of all the taros in the GH, they look the best :) Is there anyway you might have sent me a piece of this walking iris then? someone sent me a type of walking iris and I didn't ID it so have no idea which it is...lol...silly. Anyway, just wanted to say hey and thanks again :)

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Very interested!! D-mailing!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Mine are white with touch of blue, but here a pic of how they walk

once they bloom, the stem so heavy that it falls over and makes a baby. The babies will root right into the ground as soon as they touch it , or you can take them of f and plant them in a pot or where you want.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Would it compare to how say, bamboo walks?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

No bambo walks under the ground and can and does travel about 50 feet at a time. Thes e guys just travel right next to mom making small clumps.

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

If you are still looking for homes for the babies I would love to adopt a yellow walking Iris. It looks as if I will have to over winter it but what is new? I have 3 racks growing indoors all winter. That is until i start my seeds!!
Thank You. What should i do now?? May I send you a check for postage? please advise.

Independence, LA(Zone 8b)

If you put them in a pot they will throw their babies over the side like a spider plant. Very neat plant :)

Roswell, NM(Zone 6a)

Hi Noell
I would like a start of your Walking Iris
I have the following for trade
It may be the same variety as Starlight's

What a cutie! When you find out the exact name, let us know please.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

It's neomarcaria gracilis:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2108/

I just got it from a local place, looking forward to the blooms.

Waynesboro, MS(Zone 8a)

Tropicanna I am not sure if mine is N gracilis or N norhiana I wonder how one can tell them apart
I wonder if Noell's is N lonifolia or one not shown in the plant data
Charlie

Mableton, GA(Zone 7a)

I just read that it is only hardy to Zone 8. How hard and fast do you think that rule is? I'm in Zone 7a.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Charlie, I wish I knew more about these, they're new to me. You bring up a good point, they look alike from the PF pictures. My only guess would be that if yours are living outside, then it would likely be gracilis, as norhiana seems to be a lot less hardy from what I can tell.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Charlie... yep your and mine are the same. : )

3 gardeners... You would need to bring yours in for the winter. I either bring mine in here, or since I have so many pots this year I have them in my makeshift gh.

I left my first ones outside over the winter and mulched them. They took forever to come back. They won't emerge until the weathre gets nice and toasty warm and I still lost one or two when I left them outside all winter long.

After that I put them on my kichen counter and they bloomed in the house and made babies that hung down over the edge of the counter.

Waynesboro, MS(Zone 8a)

I bring mine in also
It also does not produce a lot of blooms, however the foliage is very attractive and prolific.
They would probably make great hanging basket specimens
Charlie

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Any left? Wouldn't be able to get one till May, but I have a collection of walking iris-neomarica gracilis, cypella coelesti, neomarica sabini, trimezia rupestris and trimezia martii (these may be what you have since they are yellow). A few have bloomed. I grew most of them from seed from a seller in Brazil.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Boojum can you please post some pictures of the different ones you have? I googled them and could not find any images

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Cypella coelestis.
