I am going to be coming to visit the Houston area in the next couple of week-ends and I wanted to know if there were any wonderful nurseries in the areas that I should visit. This next week-end we will be in the Woodlands and the following week-end will be Katy. Thanks for any advice!
nursery close to the Woodlands or Katy area
Hi Annie!
There are some great nurseries in Houston area, but it might be too early to be shopping. If you send a d-mail to ....knolan...., she will undoubtedly know the spots to try! She lives in the Houston area.
Looks like you may live near me. I go on 'plant safaris' in the spring with some good friends. We hit some great nurseries, have a nice lunch, and get home in time to hide/plant whatever we've purchased from our husbands. We've gone as far as Rosenburg and McAllen too.....
Looking forward to meeting you.
Sandi
Hi AnnieJo and bigbubbles:
I didn't know there were so many DGers here in Austin. I am in Kyle and Ivy and I have a small 'mom and pop' propagation nursery in our back yard. Gene
I would love to meet up with some other local nursery addicts. I have been looking for a gardening club or some other way to meet people that are obsessed with this hobby. Do people in our area (central Texas) ever have the swaps or group field trips?
Annie
Annie, I have not been a member long enough to know. You may want to check out the botanical garden area at Barton Springs. I know they used to have a rose pruning get together in Feb. I think it was. Learn how to prune roses then go to work on their rose garden. I think they have a bonsai groop that meets there also. Your county extension agent may have more info. Gene
Please join us Jan. 24th at 7 PM at Zilker Botanical Gardens for the Garden Club of Austin mtg. The program will be Rain Water Harvesting. Meetings are open to everyone. Go to www.austingardeners.org to read a little about the group. Zilker hosts many garden clubs, both meeting at night and some during the day. 'Google' Zilker and you can see all the clubs that meet there. I don't know what your interests are, but there's a garden group that's a perfect fit, I promise!
Hi AnnieJo -
Since you're going to be in the Woodlands area....the VERY best nursery around that area is in Tomball and it's called The Arbor Gate. You can spend hours there.
Similarly - close to Katy (but not in Katy) is Enchanted Forest in Thompsons and Enchanted Garden in Richmond. Oh...and Caldwell's in Rosenberg. Enchanted Forest is by far, my fav. pic of all....you will think you stopped off in heaven. If you visit those, give me a hollar and I'd be happy to try and meet up with you for a little tour. Unfortunately, The Arbor Gate is a little too far for me but it's well worth the visit.
Thanks for the info! I am so excited!!! I am going up there with my daughter's high school soccer team as a chaperone so I will have to cut and run when I can so I won't be able to do very much of the advance planning thing. I am so sorry - I would love to tour it with you. Good thing I am taking a large vehicle....and my husband thinks that the Woodland's mall is the danger..hee-hee.
Arbor Gate is fantastic. The people there are super knowledgeable, and also, they have many gardens with plant combinations to make note of - herb gardens, annual gardens, etc. They also have a great selection of roses, and even have a start of one you may have read about that survived hurricane Katrina - They are off of Hiway 249, and 2920 in Tomball -
