Some of last winters Redwings.

I have always been amazed at the change of a male redwing when a rival shows up.

I can't get over how much red is on their wings. I've never seen that much in my yard.

If they can see you, they won't show it. It is just a warning to other redwings. They don't like to share food.

Great pictures.
We of course use these guys as an indicator of springtime. We see the red often during courting and of course protecting thier seeds.
It is amazing how the patch on their sides is just a little orangish line and it brightens to full neon red when they puff out.
Great catch of this show.
We get thousands of these guys in the summer. We are on the edge of a marsh with lots of cattails they seem to like to live in. When they flock up in the fall, you hear them in the morning all singing. It is the most amazing sound.

Thanks, cpartschick. They do indeed put on a show at times. The males are just now starting to appear, but still rarely.
Their song is my favorite of all birds.

Beautiful RWBBs Trois!! They visit me too, from the nearby fields. I agree they have a nice song.
