This is a pix of a brug I brought in for the winter, and as you can see, she has many new shoots, several from the trunk of the plant, and some from the root system. What should I do now? cut all those off and root them, or let all of them grow as one plant outside this spring? She seems to be a happy camper, sharing her bed with a sweet potato, ? trumpettaters, lol. just kidding. This is my first time, except for when I brought it in this fall? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appriciated :0) Thanks Rose
What should I do?
Looks like she is happy! She could use more light, would be my guess that's why they are a little "leggy". Other than that, your plant is obviously happy! I'm thinking if it works, don't fix it. :) If you want to root cuttings, I'd wait till spring.
If it were my plant, I'd snap off a few of the shoots just to give more energy to making just a few strong ones.
Trumpettaters, lol for sure. LOL
Yes, Joyce is so right, wait till spring if you are planning to make cuttings. More chance of success.
I love it when my brugs send out shoots from the base like that. They usually grow up straight and true, perfect for brug standards which is my favorite kind. I always let them grow on the mother plant for they will grow quite fast. Once they got to the height I wanted, 6 ft or so, I would then cut them off at the base and root them. If it was a special brug, I would leave 2 nodes at the base on the mother plant for it will then spike more shoots from those nodes. The suckers direct from the roots usually make taller standards than the sideshoots from the base, I found.
If you are not interested in a bunch of standards but want just one, do what Joyce said and pick your strongest shoot and take off the others. The remaining one should shoot straight up and make a great standard.
If you prefer the bush look, let them all grow and hope they Y low.
At any time you can cut off the shoots to make cuttings but they root more easily in spring when in full growth mode for sure like Joyce said and if they have some semi hardwood or hardwood at the base they are harder to rot like green wood is. Rotting can also be more of a problem in winter.
Good luck. Looks to me like your first brug is a happy brug off to a good start.
Thank you both so much, I wasnt sure what to do :0) Spring is just around the corner. Rose
Say it louder, Rose!!
SPRING IS AROUND THE CORNER!!!
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
SPRING IS HERE? Mother nature thinks so, last week it was down to neg 1 degree, and the past 2 days its been in the 60's But here in Indiana the saying is" wait a while and the weather will change." LOL yeah I think that about summs it up. Its suppose to get back down to the 30's by weeks end. However the 1st of Feb will be maple syrup fest, when they plug the trees here in Indiana for syrup. Sorry, lol it just gets us closer to SPRING, Lowes has flower and veggie seeds out, I bought some...hehehe. Rose
Hi wizz, where is Cayuga? our weather is just like yours, very unstable, last night we had the most awful storm, flooded a lot of places. I am 50 miles from INDY halfway to Cincy.
Hi Kareoke, I am on the other side of Indy, about 90 miles, 15 miles south of I-74, on hwy 63 south. I love hummers also, this fall durring their migration south, I had well over 100 hummers in my back yard, lol they must have heard I had extra sweet nectar. I took videos, and stills, I should have changed my shutter speed to get a better pix, but I was so excited to see more than the 3 or 4 that live nearby, I didnt want to miss it. It was at dusk, and I called my daughter to come over and see them. none of us had seen or heard such a site. Sorry to ramble, but I saw you enjoy hummers also, so I thought I would cheerp in, lol. I grew angle trumpets for the first time this year and daturas and they are beautiful. My Grandpa ott morning glorys got me hooked on mg's, and then I found DG, and got hooked on JMG, WOW, I love all flowers. Rose
