Rich
Lets see your earthbox[s]
Rich, check out any of Tplant's posts, either here or on the Tomato forum. He's probably the guru of EBs, and has grown all sorts of veggies and tomatoes in his. I'm trying them out myself this summer, based on his successes!
Ditto, I was hoping to have mine set up this week, or at least a start. Cold weather made that impossible. My problem is sun,. and really not having full sun anywhere nearly all day. I cheaped out and got the ones with no castors, so I need to make sure they are where they are going to stay. I still havent decided exactlly how I will plant them. I want to plant some 'red ripper' peas. I am wondering tho, if it is wasting a box to do that. I wonder how many peas only 16 vines would give..or two boxes 32 vines. Alot to learn. Thank goodness for those who came before, and their pictures and info.
How did your tomato support system work for you? I need to do som3thing for my new ones, trying to figure out my best option...
Just fine until the plants grew over 4 ft tall. I need a better system
Jill,
Hi, I live in Cave Creek. Are you growing tomatoes in Tocson? We have been trying to grow them in the green house in the winter but haven't had much luck.
Mickey
Hi Mickey,
Yes, I'm in Tucson, and every summer I make the attempt at growing tomatoes. This year I'm experimenting with all-new varieties, as well as the EBs. Last year I lost a huge amount of my crop to ground squirrels, so I'm really hoping that doesn't happen again. I don't have any enclosed space, like a greenhouse, so I don't have any ideas on that front, except what are your temperatures like inside? If nighttime lows are too low, even if the days are nice and warm I don't think you'll get fruit set. The folks over in the Tomato forum would probably be a lot of help to you, though--I know they've given me all sorts of good advice!
hey everyone, so I am thinking about veggy gardening and saw this post .......
EB's .......are these just large containers?
if so, is it sort of like container gardening?......... and how would plants like squash or cucumbers work? I guess the runners could drape down onto the ground ?
I think EBs are ust large pts that water themselfs. Can be built diy... Hydroponics are also a good option.
Rich
Think large, self-watering containers with continuous fertilization and permanent mulch. The newer ones have an optional trellis system that you could use to go vertical with squash or other vines, or use for supporting tomatoes or any other tall plants. Also, of course, you could allow vines to trail on the ground. The whole idea behind EBs is that you set them up, plant them, refill the reservoir as needed and harvest--no additional mulching, fertilizing, weeding etc. needed. I think it's the fertilization aspects that really differentiate EBs from other standard self-watering containers I've seen. They would be easier than straight container gardening (with regular pots) because the soil is maintained at a constant moisture level, and you don't have to do any guesswork with the fertilizing.
Sounds interesting I want to learn more. I'll follow this thread. EB (Earthboxes)? Never heard of that before.
You can also check the link for the company: http://www.earthbox.com/ Lots of good info there as well!
Thanks, tucsonjill!
