Please pass the word and keep your eyes peeled for a missing Deerhound, possibly last seen in Bowie this morning (2/18/08). All details, including photos, can be found here: http://www.lostdeerhound.com/
Here's the general information:
"On November 21st, 2007, Yeonwoo, Jon, and their two dogs, Attila and Haggis, were on their way to Jon's parents' for Thanksgiving. Their car was rear-ended by a speeding car on Route 50-Eastbound, just before Exit 11-Collington Rd/Bowie in Maryland.
Their car rolled twice until it crashed into the guard rail. Both dogs escaped from the car. Although uninjured, Yeonwoo and Jon were immediately taken to a trauma center and were not allowed to search for their dogs.
Attila was hit and killed by a car soon after the accident. Haggis is still missing. He has been seen many times since the accident in Bowie and Lanham, MD.
Haggis is a one-year old Scottish Deerhound intact male.
He has been seen with his collar and tags.
He is likely to be very scared and may not come when called. The best strategy is to call us immediately.
Please do NOT attempt to approach Haggis. Sitting or lying down might get him to come to you."

For Anyone in the Bowie or Lanham, MD Vicinity
Oohh, you lost your pouch?? My heart goes out to you!! I have a dog also, and I have a collar on him with our contact numbers and address. He has gotten out of the backyard many times, but we have been fortunate for such good neighbors who find him and bring him back. I do hope you find your dog. Wish you luck!!.
[smile] No, this is not my dog, I just want to help get the word out. He was last seen two days ago, so although the car accident happened at Thanksgiving, this sweet boy is still on the loose and surviving!
This story has made the Washington Post and other local newspapers - it's a gut wrenching one. A couple was traveling down rt. 50 along with their two dogs on their way to relatives for Thanksgiving when they were rear-ended by a speeding car. This caused the couple's car to go out of control, roll twice, then hit the guard rail. That's when the two dogs were ejected or somehow got out of the vehicle and onto the highway. One dog was immediately hit and killed by a passing car, by Haggis is still alive. There is hope for him. I hope that anyone who sees this will pass the word to those whom they know are in this area.
Haggis was last sighted TODAY on Daisy Ln, near the WB&A Trail between Hillmeade Rd and Rt 193 (10:00 AM 1/5/08)
And near Forbes Blvd & Everly Ter, Lanham, MD (12:30 PM 1/03/08)
Also, at Worrell Ave & Seabrook Rd, Lanham, MD (6:30 AM 1/03/08)
If you think you might have seen Haggis
please call us day or night: 202-492-4055
Wrightie, Tell them If at all practicial in that area, to put boxes with their dirty clothes in them in areas where they think the dog is near. If the dog finds a box with the familiar scent it will stay nearby. We had a very old and blind dog go missing for more than two weeks in pretty rough weather and got him back he lost a lot of weight but otherwise OK. He was blind and wandered back into the woods. Good Luck
Hi Holly, they are doing that and more - it's very impressive, this network of searchers! They have feeding stations, tracking dogs and a live trap set for him, but he is terrified and covering 6 or 8 miles, back and forth. Poor thing!
Thanks for the story behind this dog, Wrightie. I guess I wasn't in on the news lately. I do hope he finds his way back. It's strange how the dogs got out of the car right after the accident.
Many times this past year, our gate got opened somehow and our dog (a Jack Russell terrier) got out. The people who live across the street with a English bulldog and fox terrirer had the same thing happen, and others in the area. I thought someone was going around and letting dogs out for fun.
I do hope they find Haggis. He is an exotic-looking hound.
The window popped out or was smashed during the accident, so that's how the two dogs got out - possibly ejected from the vehicle.
Update: Possible Sighting: Alstead Drive & Amber Meadows, Bowie, MD (4:30 PM 1/07/08)
I hope he 'comes home' while we still have nice weather, before the cold comes back.
There have been some promising reports in recent days, but he does seem to be avoiding roads, so it's important for people to get out on the trails to look for him. Poor thing. I went out looking for him on Sunday and am going to see if I can get out there this weekend on horseback.
The owners must be devastated - I feel terrible about this - and poor "little" guy - he must be terrified
I KNOW - I feel the same way!
I drive that corridor each day with work and I find myself scanning the area for him as I drive - can't help it.
Smart dog to avoid the roads but then...he's as elusive as deer when it comes to finding him. I do hope there will be a turn in the story before the weekend. It seems with all the advanced space technology, can we ask NASA to help??? I mean, if they can locate another solar system with a sun eons away, can't they help find a 4-legged beast in a confined area in town??
Just an update to let you know that this search continues.
The other day I submitted this story to the Ellen Degeneres Show's website and am hoping that they will pick up the story ... especially since the local media is pretty much blowing it off.
Whoops, I guess that this qualifies as a "current event" ... if so, my apologies.
I was thinking about this last week after I saw that big hound at the dog park.
I would hope this is not the kind of thing that could get people arguing and hence earn the 'current event' ban. It would be great if Ellen picked it up- of not for this pup, I bet she would donate to a local shelter.
Possible Sighting this morning: Near Melvin Motors on RTE 450, Bowie, MD (8:30 AM 2/18/08)
Also, there will be an organized search for him on March 1st. Details can be found here: http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php?showtopic=188013
They are looking for as many volunteers to help out on Saturday as possible.
Also, FOX news is going to cover this search on Saturday.
I see trap info but don't know how to find out about Saturday specifically.
There's a flyer with details for the search on Saturday in my post two or three above, but here's a recent quote from the Greytalk forum:
Sally just called to confirm that we will getting coverage from FOX news!!!!
We need as many people to come out as possible! And bring your hounds!!
Just posted the following to GW's groups to drum up some vols:
What: Search for Haggis
When: 3/1 at 10:00 AM
Where: We will be meeting in Bowie at the end of Gallant Fox Lane in the parking lot of the EZ Storage behind the McDonalds at the intersection of 197 and 450.
Who: Come one, Come all!
Most of you already know the story of Haggis but for those who don't, Haggis is the beloved Scottish Deerhound of Yeonwoo and Jon, fellow GW adopters and GW foster parents. We have been searching for Haggis since Thanksgiving and there have been possible recent sightings. This Saturday, March 1st, a search event has been organized to help renew awareness in the surrounding community and bring Haggis home!!!
To read more about this effort and everything that has previously transpired, please visit www.lostdeerhound.com. This website provides information and links to anything and everything Haggis.
Hope to you see you there!

More recent sightings, and NEWS:
The tracker had a couple of hours to kill in the afternoon, so she went to the area of the last sighting today. She and her dog were easily able to pick up Haggis's scent, which went right across Rt 197 as described, and then past the DAV, into a swamp (!) and then reconnected on the other side of the swamp. The amazing thing is that she found herself outside of the Tom Thumb Nursery! The tracker spoke at lengths with a man who lives directly across from the nursery, and walks his dog along the railroad everyday.
Also, the man said he would set up a food station in his yard. There is an abandoned house with shed next door to him as well.
Suffice it to say, the tracker said her boots were filthy and her golden retriever turned into a mud retriever. "Dirty brown" is a perfect description for Haggis then.
I hate to be away this weekend. I'm planning on taking off work on Monday to flyer this region like crazy. Thanks to Donna et al. for putting up flyers already. The tracker only came across a couple today, so I would like to completely plaster the area. If anyone needs flyers for this weekend, please let me know. I can drop off a stack on our way up to PA tonight.
