High Winds in CA

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

So last year we loose everything to a freak forty year freeze... this year it's wind.
Harbor Freight Greenhouse cannot take 60mph winds.. the panels are probably in the next town. LOL

I don't remember winds like this ever in Lodi or Stockton!

I can't feel sorry for myself, cause there are so many others with much worse damage! My heart just aches this morning.. I hope everyone is okay!

Joyce, I am so sorry that you have had this damage. The first thing I did this morning was to run out and check on mine, but so far so good.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you Patricia.. I'm so glad your stuff is all okay!!
I am afraid the frame is going to collapse.. I've tightened some of the nuts, but it's wanting to lay over on it's side.. the brugs are so tangled, I can't get them out without breaking them worse..The power is going on and off, I just need to shut off the computer and close my eyes till it's over! My loss is nothing compared to some..

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

Gosh ZZ you are having the worst luck lately! Hope everything gets better for you. Hopefully mother nature has gotten it all out of her system and the rest of 2008 will be better.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Joyce, I hope things improve for you. Do you have any plastic that you can drape over the greenhouse?

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh no! Hope you can save it. If you lose brugs, anything I have you can have a piece of come spring.

That storm hasn't arrived here yet, but we've already received the reverse 911 phone warning. They're most worried about flood and mud slides in the burn area. I'm not worried about that in my neighborhood, but this might be a test of our shade area. I think I'll go close the umbrellas at least.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Joyce, I'm so sorry. I hope everything will be okay when it is over. I can't imagine what you all have had to go through in the last few months. Be safe.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

I hope that you are ok, Joyce. After reading the net and watching the weather channel, ya'll are really going through some rough weather!! Hopefully you are not one of the unfortunate ones that lost power.

My thoughts are with you, chick!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

The power is back on and I'm okay.. we are all okay. My heart aches awfully bad, but I have a lot to be thankful for. The winds today were not anything I've ever experienced in my 40 years here... so there was no way to know exactly what we were in for. 76mph wind gusts were reported 12 miles from here.. 86 mph in Sacramento! Whew!

So many people have trees falling on their house.. I sure can't cry over my lil greenhouse. My brugs will grow back.. my heart will heal... Thank you all for the kind words..... SEE? I have much to be thankful for.. all of you brugsterz who really know what a loss like this can feel like. Thank you!

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

The weatherman on TV says this system is an even lower pressure system than "The Perfect Storm" was. They're talking about up to 10 feet of snow in the north, and we're expecting 5-6 inches of rain here in the south. I'm glad I have several books to read, a shaker-power flashlight, and a nice husband to spend the storm with tomorrow. Hope the rest of you Californians stay safe and dry.

Hope the football players like playing in the mud Sunday. LOL Go Chargers!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yeah.. this one was a whopper!

Here is a pic of what was left of the GH this evening..

Wow Joyce what a storm!! I am gllad you are well and in good spirits.....come spring I should have some rooted cuttings...maybe some seedlings if they grow ;*). So for now please be safe.

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Joyce, I'm sorry to hear about your GH, but glad your safe. I also have plenty of cuttings to share if you need them. PLMK

Dollie

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

wow that is terrible...

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh Joyce, I know we have been commiserating on the phone and email, but I am just seeing the actual photos of your greenhouse and it makes me so sad. I can picture your face when I was at your place & you showed it to me last month, you were like a kid at Christmas, so excited to finally have one. And now this. :~( Thank goodness all your missing panels have been found!

2nd storm just starting here for Joyce & I, not supposed to be as vicious as the first one, lets keep all our appendages crossed that it's not, shall we? LOL Hope the rest of the state is faring ok, lots of high wind and flood advisories.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Wow, Joyce so sorry to hear of the loss of your freeze covers and now your greenhouse.
But the most important you and your family are safe and well.
Hope the storms today were mild and end quickly.

Joyce

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Joyce, Sorry to see the damage. It blew hard here last night, but it is winter (cold) here anyway. We had very wet snow this morning, but now it is beautiful and sunny. Can't wait 'til spring. Will the brugs survive? I hope so, they look so healthy.
Marie

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Oh poor Joyce! That's horrible. I'd be crying my eyes out if the wind stole my greenhouse. Although, like you say, some people really had MAJOR problems. It was like our winter storm of 2006. Trees were uprooted all over the place.... landing on people's houses and cars. Mother Nature certainly has a mean streak!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you so much everyone! This means so much to me. I felt stupid for crying about it when it's not much of a loss, compared to what so many others had. I only cried once.. LOL a loud full blown boo hoo.. LOL

I just came in.. been working all day rain or not.. I went through 4 pairs of socks and shoes and 3 different jackets.. but I got the framing almost completely done.
I got redwood 2x2's and took some of the bolts out and screwed the frame to the redwood. I believe the whole reason it blew apart was cause it started rocking and the bolts worked loose..
I will also put hooks on the wooden frame at the bottom, so if I ever have to, I can cover the whole thing with a tarp and bungie cords to hold the panels on if it ever blows like it did the other day.

I will put the brugs back in tomorrow.. I am toooo tired tonight..

I enjoyed my day.. as soaking dripping freezing wet as I was.. I was thrilled to at least be able to put it back together before I loose all the leaves and buds I had on the seedlings. What leaves did hold on are dropping fast.. They will survive, a few cuttings may not like the drastic weather changes, but the seedlings are gonna be okay.. just naked. LOL

When I put the heater back in there, I went and got a hot cup of coffee and a chair.. and sat in there for an hour or so... just happy to have my sanctuary back! I know I got a bunch of brug points for working so hard today... I hope this gives me a huge gob of blooms soon!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh I think you got points big time Joyce!!! I am so happy you got things in order.Wishing you the best blooms ever. Those were magic tears(((hugs))).
Kim

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Joyce, I think you are a very smart lady for putting it back better then it was before. Brugs know how hard you worked for them and they will bloom and bloom for you this summer.

Joan

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I am so sorry Joyce. Only time will take away the heart ache. I am still dealing with mine over 2 years later. I can't the powerful storms the west coast has been getting. Wasn't it less than a month ago that Washington or Oregon got blasted by a big storm??

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Oh ZZ, so, so sorry! Makes me appreciate my cuttings even more so that came from you! :) Hope all chills out for all of you and gets much better!
Hugs, Tammy

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH>>Joyce... too bad...I'm impressed with your repairs... hope they help get you through to spring.. the biggest forces in the light gauge greenhouses is shear..that's the twisting of the structure in the wind.. making the square walls a parrellogram... lifting of the pannels is also evident.. but that's real easy after the twisting occours.. sometimes it helps to bolt a thick plywood piece in place of one of the glass pannels.. this takes the diagional forces and takes that load off the window pannels and the framework.. [ called a shear wall ]... but that will just place more stress on a weak framing syatem.. and you will have problems there/then
That greenhouse would never make it through a winter here on the roof.. nor at mothers in north AL..
"it did photograph well ... but don't try and use it.. " The new Chineese Motto..

Wow! Joyce, I'm really impressed with the number of things you accomplished. You deserve to take it easy for a few days.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh what a sad sight! That must be so disappointing. All your hard work and love you put into your brugs, Joyce. Sounds like you really got hit hard, worse than us. That first night I couldn't sleep because I could hear the hoophouse getting knocked all over with each gust of wind but I knew as long as I heard it, it hadn't gone airborne so that was good. My backyard has standing water in it now. The only good thing is that the temps are not that cold. What are your night time temps getting to now? We are 50s in the day and mid 40s at night.

HD sells a huge roll of plastic which is what we use for the hoophouse. You could easily toss it over the top of your frame there and then put bags of soil on the ends to hold it down. The plastic is less than $60 I think and 1 roll lasts us 2 seasons. You sure are impressive in your work there. I just hope you do not get a bad cold for being so wet and cold all day!

Lets hope we now do not get hit with that arctic freeze that came last year in January. If we can make it to February we should be home free I sure hope. All my brugs outside are totally leafless now but still standing. Just an amazing storm! Very scary.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

I'm glad to hear that you have your GH back in working order. Soooo sorry to hear about the bud droppings, but hey, that's just temporary... They will get over their little shock soon and look as beautiful as ever! I'm sure they appreciated everything that you did for them! ;-)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yeah, Kell, the South winds always cause trouble here.. they blow through the carport like a wind tunnel, and it's just all aimed at the GH. Our temps are about the same as yours this week anyway. Now that the GH is sound.. I can handle freeze.. :)

I've just GOT to stop whining! I was really thrilled with my work today... I used clear shipping tape to seal the panels and I just folded the ends to leave the ends so I can take it off in the summer! I am so glad, you can't even see the tape! I can put it on the inside and outside to make sure they never blow away now!!! No more wobbly panels and I've almost framed the whole inside with redwood.

I moved all the stick plants back in. LOL There is more room now.. (no leaves) LOL

Really, I'm thrilled.. I put the heater on all day and the fan on high and got it dried out inside.. so I'm back to where I was a month or so ago! :)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

ZZ, so glad to hear you got things back on track now! I know they will be back to beautiful in nothing flat! I learned today that I lost one of my babies you had sent me, but all the rest are doing well so far. Was sad to see it, but it was the smallest, which I have no clue if that has anything to do with it, but the leaves on the others are growing and looking so purttttttttttty! :)

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I am so very happy your GH is secure and your naked babiez are under cover. Before you know it they will be all dressed up and showing off!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gosh Joyce. You are really impressive. That would be one of my TOMMMMMMMMMMM moments here. Good for you. Now feed them to get them going again. LOL

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

I would love to see what all you have done to your GH. It sounds like you took a bad thing and turned it into some good and stronger. I pray that all of the plants grow very fast and strong.

Joan

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Joyce, You are a true gardener, never quiting and making things better for your sweet plants. I have been told that hard work keeps you young. You must be a teenager by now with all the work you put into rebuilding and strengthening your greenhouse.
I am very proud of you.
Marie

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Thank you all.... it was a mental health mission.. I can't function with all my brugs in my son's room dropping leaves.. I give that blank stare when someone speaks to me.. LOL I had no choice.. I had to do it.

Dang Kell, If I would have known that I would have called TOMMMM LOL

I went out this morning and took a deep breath in the GH.. wow.. it's amazing. The morning smell in the GH is soooo nice. Even with no blooms, it's so clean and earthy.

I'm okay now!!! Off to work.. a little crooked back and bit of a slower pace, but I'm outta here with a smile. LOL

Thank you everyone for all the encouragement.. you fuel my fire. :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Joyce. You are so cute. Everyone should have a Tom. I should do something nice for him today. I think I will.

Have a great day at work. I bet you feel so much better knowing you brubs are back to growing.
