I want to make a plant playground this summer for my kids. If anyone has large sunflowers (6 foot and up) or extra gourd seeds(nothing specific) I will send postage or trade for what I have.
In case anyone is wondering... I'm going to make a wire tunnel for the gourds and the sunflowers will be planted so that they can go into the middle of them. I've seen sunflowers that have thick stems and huge blooms and think this would be really fun for them.
CLOSED: wanted: large sunflowers and gourds
I have a box of gourds that were harvested winter 2006/07. The kids have really enjoyed painting them and making birdhouses. I'm not sure of the type...actually there are a few different kinds. They grew on their own all over my property the spring after Hurricane Katrina...along with watermelon, cantaloupe, and a few other things. I live on the Biloxi river so somebody up stream had a nice garden.
What do you have to trade? I'm really interested in edibles. We're replacing all of the trees that we lost with fruit and such.
We are doing the same thing! I planted a mulberry where are large oak went down and blueberries where a gardenia was lost.
Well, my husband brought home some orangelos and lemons from someone at work that has an orchard. I'm saving the seeds from both but don't know about cross pollination possibilies so will need to check on it. Orangelos are those cute little shrubs that have tiny oranges all over them this time of the year. Since we are in the same area something like that should do well for you. I also have some starfruit seeds that I have already planted but if more than 3 sprout I won't need all of them. I would imagine I'll have some mulberry available too since birds tend to spread the seeds. I will keep you in mind this spring. Everything else I have is on my trade list (everything I have will do well for you!)
You may want to try this: If you strip the lower leaves off the sunflower stems, you can use them as a pole for climbing beans. If you choose purple ones this will be an extra treat for your kids as they turn green when you cook them!
I can offer you seeds of sunflowers (species unknown), birdhouse gourds and purple beans. Also Walking stick kale, which grows really tall and will come to look like a little tree if you keep picking the lower leaves.
Please send me a d-mail if you're interested.....
