sustaining wildlife

Norwood, LA(Zone 8a)

Anyone interested in adding native wildlife to the discussion of sustainability?

This topic would discuss benefits and problems we encounter with all the other animals that come onto our property, whether we want them to or not.

Many of us DGardeners are having to deal with deer and rabbits eating our gardens. There are, I think, ways of dealing with them other than using fences. Any success stories out there in DG Land?

I feed songbirds but realize that it's not natural to provide seeds in feeders--not healthy for the birds and it may possibly increase disease.

I'm also anti-turf but still mow the lawn to keep the land near our house from turning into a complete jungle. I think that everyone has a responsibility to let a space or two go "wild." like letting native grasses grow tall for a whole year, giving food and cover for bees, beneficial insects, birds, etc.

My crazy dream is to see suburbanites creating corridors (which Sara Stein proposes in "Noah's Garden) so that wild critters can live in and traverse connecting habitats--instead of being starved out in the green deserts--aka "lawns"--that everyone thinks they must have on their land.

Any other crazy dreamers out there?
