We recently had to make an emergency trip to another state. We didn't have any time to make arrangements for our cats to be looked after, so we took them with us.
They are all indoor cats and did not like the idea of being taken out to the van to a cage. One of our cats totally freaked out and tore into my hands leaving deep wounds that took nearly three weeks to start healing.
When it was time to leave to come home I dreaded moving the cats from that house to the van again. I tried wearing gloves, but couldn't grab the cat very well and manipulate them into the cage. I bought a large ferret type cage that I put all six of them in for the trip.
I really didn't want to get ripped up again so it came to me to get a pillow case and put the cat in it for the move to the cage. It worked great. I just scooped the cat into the pillow case, and twisted it shut til I got to the cage and then put the cat and case in the doorway and let it crawl into the cage.
If you ever have to move a scared cat, this works well. No cuts or scratches and the first one is now healing except for scarring. LOL!
Most of them liked the house we visited and enjoyed going up and down into the basement. We don't have one, so they were all into exploring.
Only one cat, our shy Mouse, was traumatized and hid in the basement for nearly a week. We finally trapped her in a small space and carried her upstairs. She had to go to the vet because she refused to eat and was really getting upset by the whole ordeal.
She responded to the Vet's treatment of fluids and antibiotics. She developed a fever even while there.
Once home she settled back in well again. If we go back up to Illinois, I think I will still take them along again. We will just have to be careful that Mouse is kept upstairs and confined better.
I think boarding them or having someone come here to look after them will just upset them more than the trip will.
I found an easy way to transport my cat
