What is your favorite long-handled bulb planter for daffodils and other bulbs that need a 6" deep hole? I can't use a drill -- too many rocks. I currently have a "bulb hound" which is great, but it only digs about a 4"-5" hole, which isn't deep enough. http://www.amazon.com/Hound-Dog-Products-GARDEN-PLANTER/dp/B0000BYE3N And I have an old and bent long-handled planter that digs a nice 6" hole, but it is very hard to remove the dirt from the planter so it isn't very practical.
I saw one sturdy bulb planter that is based on fence post technology, but it claims to dig a 4" diameter hole, and that is too big for neighboring perennials.
If you have a planter that you like, please let me know! (Or if there is already a thread on this, please direct me to it -- I couldn't find it.) Many thanks!
Planter for daffodils
Down here we only plant them 2-3" deep--but that might be because we are much warmer. I just sit and dig with the hand trowel, have pretty good soil after 16 years. I do have a lot of daff's planted and planted even more this year. I also mulch pretty heavy too.
The bulb addiction continues...no cure in sight.

That's good to know -- that you only plant 2-3" deep. My step-son has been helping me plant, but his holes are only 4-5" deep, and I've been sort-of at his mercy. Maybe they'll survive . . . but I've read that to get them to perennialize well, you should plant them 6-8" deep. We're not close! We don't mulch though; they are planted on a slope and all the mulch would wash away. In past years, I let the leaves sit on the ground to act as a mulch, by my step-son is a maniacal leaf blower so there is nary a leaf in sight this year!
The Narcissus varieties that do naturalize well here do so when planted at the 2-3" depth; but I'm pretty sure that's a function of our temp's and the constant addition of mulch. One thing I've found out about all kinds of bulbs (and I do grow a lot) is that they will pull themselves down to their desired depth by contractile roots; but if they are planted too deeply to begin with, they can be lost.
They should love being on that slope though--daff's like as dry a dormancy as possible (at least down here anyway).
If your stepson is a good weeder, send him down here for the winter!

The stepson is a great weeder if he decides he wants to weed, but he only weeds when he feels like it. . . . .
Sounds just like my teenage daughter...
:)
Well you are doing better than me. My teenage daughters wouldn't be caught dead weeding!
