late December blooms

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Looks like this list could use an infusion of photos so here are some new seedlings showing up here in December.
Cyberspace (Cupid's Arrow x Blueberry Sundae) is only about six inches but so far has been fascinating to watch . .

Hope Floats (Lady of the Night x Georgia's Pearl) is not very distinctive in a world filled with pink hibiscus, but it is so productive and comes on such a nice plant that it may make it to marketing anyhow . .
peace,
Barry

Dreamy is a cross of Rosiland x Barry Schlueter and each bloom has been memorable so far. With doubles the bloom production in summer is always a question, so this one has a long way to go before being released, if it survives testing.

Barry

Golden Egg (Ashley Frances x Goin' Steady) so far looks like the popular Goin' Steady sold by Hines . . in yellow. It has a chance to be very successful, but it is too new to count on. Love the fluffy, 7" flowers, though. BTW, I left out sizes on the last two: Hope Floats is about 8" and Dreamy so far in the cool season is 7".
peace and joy,
Barry

Ragtime Band is an interesting 6-7" double so far, a little frenetic in appearance but maybe just right for ragtime . .

I like:
Cyberspace
Hope Floats (also liked the movie)
Ragtime Band.

Hope Floats may be pink, but it is a beautiful pink.

I've never been a big proponent of doubles, but I do like Golden Egg and Ragtime. I think I only have two or three doubles. The two singles are awesome, especially Cyberspace. What a thrill it must be to have all of the new babies start blooming.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

My favs are Dreamy and Ragtime Band. Dreamy is really gorgeous--I hope it passes the tests and gets released!

Cyberspace?
Stop this immediately, Barry.
My wallet is in pain...lots of pain...
:-)

Saginaw, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, just getting into Hibiscus again. Cyberspace and Ragtime are beautiful. I'm guessing I'll be broke pretty soon. Hoping to learn a lot from you guys. Been out of the loop for a few years.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Mimi,
You will. Prepare to go broke!

Saginaw, TX(Zone 8a)

what a fun way to go broke.....haha

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Welcome, Mimi.
We are halfway between HOuston and Galveston. As a fellow Texan, you have a challenge with overwintering hibiscus in Fort Worth. Will you move pots in and out of protected areas, or use greenhouse or other coverups?
luck to you,
Barry

btw, here's a photo for those of you who think that hybridizing hibiscus is elegant work . .
;-)
Somebody has to keep the irrigation working despite the oak tree roots, when you work from your home . . and that would be ME.

Unlike some of you, I manage to work neatly and stay crisp and clean . .

Ahhh, now you are looking like a gardener. I think a lot of us have days that aren't so neat and clean. Like maybe most of the spring until everything is planted. LOL! I don't have irrigation to keep running, but Iowa has lots of black dirt and I manage to get into it more than my share of the time. There is something to be said for the "Crisp and Clean" look. It indicates hard work to me. Keep up the good work.

Ahhh... The Well Turned Out Gardener

Saginaw, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the welcome Barry. I wish I was lucky enough to have a greenhouse. I do have a green room in my house though. It is already full of plants being overwintered. But I can always find room for a few more.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Oak tree roots, Aggghhhhhh, we have the hateful things too.

Dreamy, Ragtime and Golden Egg need to take test drives in SC. ;-))))

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Very Nice Barry!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I already bought so many of your new ones today. I am a gaud queen and yours call to me. Where do you come up with such great names? Do they just come to you as you look at the flowers.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kell, I created a simple database of prospective names with a keyword like "red" or "brown" or "mini" or "double" or "crested" or even "multicolor". We add names all the time, always watchful for signs and such when in the car, checking out new names of lipsticks and nail polish, reading paint color names at Lowes . . so when a new brown comes along, we go first to our database, and myself and wife or other helper sit with the bloom and the computer open to the name list and we look for names that seem to fit the bloom somehow. We make a list of five or more, then take turns striking names and arguing until MY choice wins.
;-)
Just joking. Last one to strike from the list really chooses the name, but generally it is an amicable process . . and actually fun. Until we go to
http://www.internationalhibiscussociety.org/SEArchive/
and discover that someone has already used that name. Sigh.

peace,
Barry

Just got home from a very, very late night at work. when one nuse doesn't show up, we all have to stay and do our part. Barrys pics brought a smile to my face, because this is what I look like most mornings before I get ready for work :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I bet you have loads of fun, Barry. I can tell from your pictures. I love that it is a family affair.

I too get covered in mud. My husband can't understand how I get it all over. My face can even get covered. I must admit, I am a mess naturally. LOL

I am going to be the envy of my little California town with my new Barry creations. I can't wait for them all to bloom. For some reason fancy hibiscus are just not common here.

Oh Cat, are you a nurse? I am a nurse! It is always hard when someone does not show. I remember those days.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Barry, your babies could not go to a better home than Kell's; this is but one example of her garden handiwork.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Alice. My garden looks like that for exactly 10 minutes every year and wasn't I so lucky I had a camera handy. LOL Sad and so true.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Do you think we really believe your garden only looks like that for a brief period? Yeah right; you are an exceptional gardener and I would love to live next door to such a beautiful garden and gardener.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't believe that for a second...I bet if I went over there right now even though it's the middle of winter with all the rain and wind it would still look amazing!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yep, amazingly messy. LOL. And so wet. LOL.

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Barry, what beautiful new hibiscus! I especially like Cyberspace, Dreamy and Ragtime Band. Cool picture too - love that hat! It's always nice to put a face with the name =)

Kell, every picture I've seen of your yard is gorgeous and your yard looks straight out of a magazine; I'm quite sure it looks great all the time!
