Searching for Old Timey Vinning Petunia Seed

Louisville, KY

I remember seeing a thread some time ago here of folks growing the old timey vinning Petunia. I would be interested in getting some seed for these; my mother use to grow them when I was young and I remember they had an interesting aroma. I have saved seed of Jolly Jester Marigold, an old French variety grown by Thomas Jefferson in 1790 and a variety of Heirloom Tomato Seed..

FYI, if you don't find any here, Southern Exposure Seed Catalog ( www.sourthernexposure.com ) lists them.

They describe them as..." everblooming and much hardier than modern varieties, this old favorite blooms into the fall when other annuals have faded and gone. Two flowers of mixed colors ranging from white to various shades of lavender and purple. Ht 18-24". Sweet frangrance, reminiscent of Lily-of-the-Vally."

Hope this is what you are looking for--Good Luck!

VGMKY,I have some of this seed if you are interested. It does indeed live up to the seed house promo-- blooms all season, grows very quickly, germinates easily, and is unfazed by heat or drought. It does have a nice fragrance, but you have to sniff the bloom up close to notice the scent. It looks nice when allowed to grow through shrubs. I grew some through a bed of tall burgundy Amaranthus. The flowers are smaller than bedding petunias, and the colours are pink, dark pink, purple, pink-y purple, and white.

Do you have a trade list?

The photo shows vining petunias to the right of some annual monarda. Here they were just allowed to sprawl naturally and intertwine with some pineapple sage nearby.
