New hatch Monarch

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

This fellow hatched right outside my window. It took about an hour for it to dry enough to fly.

It is still hanging near it's old home.

He/she looks perfect! I love to see them eclose when they are outside, it's just a miracle...considering all the dangers.

Is it warm there? It's getting cold here at night.

Beautiful! Lucky you.

Thanks, I took the pics Christmas day. It was warm for a few hours. There were many butterflies around this morning before the very strong winds came, at about 11AM. The overnight low was 67 degrees. It is 45 right now.

Thanks, svplantingfool, and indeed I am lucky.

Gosh Trois, I always love your pics! Tell me again, what kind of camera do you have? I can't wait until spring to see your bird pics!

Thaks, konkreteblond. It's nice to know someone is watching.

I have a cludge camera. I started with a Pentax k 10D, bought an adaptor from China, and mounted a Medium format 135 mm macro lense on it. This gives me an equivalent 800 mm lense that will focus down to 2 feet.
This is a DSLR with manual focus. It will always focus on what I want, not just something closer that the camera likes.

This way I don't have to get so close to a critter or a small flower on the ground. The drawback is that it is heavy. I also use a tripod most of the time.

We still have no Northern birds, just our year round residents.

Yesterday I observed about 10 or so eclosing Monarchs. It was one of those days when you have company that has no interest in such things, so I was not able to take pictures. Maybe there will be more today.

Trois, sorry to hear about your company ;-( They are missing out!
Wow, so many monarchs, that's cool. I'll be watching for more pics too!

Sometimes duty requires being nice to relatives. The world is full of such folks, as they said they would be afraid to live here, way out in the country. That at least gives me some privacy.

It seems that every time the temp gets over 60 degrees the Monarchs start popping out. We just don't have a great number of flowers like we did a month ago.

Oh yes, I sometimes only get time to scan thru pics and yours are always ones I look at!

I now I remember why I love looking at your pics, and letting you take them tho! lol I do love photography but kids don't allow me enough time to work so hard at it. I've had to learn to love the point and click digitals.

Keep up the good work, I'm enjoying it!
