CLOSED: Best tomato?

Chesapeake, VA

What is your favorite tomato? Which should I avoid? I want a good old-fashioned taste, and meaty. Come on now, give me some advice here...

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

my favorites are beef steaks ... nice and meaty.

I have other favorites for other reasons .... i love the big meaty ones for sandwiches and burgers
Romas for salads or cooking

I think out of the ones i grew last year, the best performers for me were, napoli romas and 1884 both were Heirloom seeds I got in trade.

BrightStar... Did you happen to know there is a tomato forum.

No, starlight, I didn't notice the tomato forum! I'll definitely check it out. Thank you.

I wonder if there is a tomato seed swap somewhere...

Brightstar mine has to be Cherokee Purple hands down, I love the real tomato taste with a nice sweet fullfilling flavor. It's a great heirloom and to me the best.

Robyn, I saw a picture of it today - where is the purple concentrated? Is the juice purple?

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Look at this one and you can see the darker coloring at the bottom, it's not an outright purple color and the juice is a darker red than most I think. Although in certain sunlight it does have a purple glow on the bottom.

Thank you, Robyn. Where do you get your seed from?

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I try to get them from Seed saver or Burpee, if I can't then I usually go to my local nursery and buy the plants. I'm so lazy sometimes. Actually, I never know how work is going to effect my planting so sometimes if time gets away from me I will buy the plants.

We eat these right out of the garden, I cook with them and I can them. At the end of the season (and during) we eat alot of fried green tomatoes. But I also like these pickled or made into chow chow.

Hubby and I have a deal, that I don't pick any green tomatoes for frying until we get the first red ripe one off the vine. It about kills me to wait, but it keeps the peace. lol sometimes.
