Ed Gilding came to visit, and brought two flowers from his H. cv. Monette to use to pollinate some hoyas I have. Here is a photo of it...rather old and on it's way out....but notice how the darker pink is almost striped!! When freshly picked the colors were the same...
How the flowers can change!!!
All of the above images are from the same hoya...same vine...same clone.
Beautiful in all shades! What is the diameter of that one?
It's 2.5 - 3" wide.... flowers last for a long time but no fragrance.
Wow, isn't 'Monette' a beauty. The best Hoya hybrid?
Monette is really pretty! That last photo does look like a star, a Beautiful Christmas Star! and I am such a newbie to the Hoyas, I thought all the flowers were small. 2 1/2" - 3" wide, nice! Even without fragrance that is a Beauty!
OOOOO- 2.5-3?! I would love to have a Hoya with blooms that large! I've never seen one that wasn't a pic.
There are a number of Eriostemmas (a rather separated section of hoyas) with big flowers. Unfortunately, they like to 1. stay in one place
2. climb
3. have rather constant WARM and lots of sun
Mine tolerate temps into the 50's...they are very husky vines....
So my lauterbachii needs lots of sun? It gets bright indirect light all day right now. Across the room from a south facing window. But if I move it closer to the window it will get cooler at night. I keep my house pretty coll at night.
Carol, your pics are always awesome to enjoy by the rest of us!
Would you mind jumping over to DMichael's thread and tell me what kind of hoya I found today? It says Hoya Bilobata or Hoya trangii but Lin doesn't think so. We are new.
thanks
Yep, I am very new to this family of plants and I get confused easily! Do some hoyas like full sun? I think I read that some prefer cooler conditions to others. I have h. curtisii and I hope that is one that likes it cooler because I have it on the back porch and it does get colder in that location than elsewhere. If temps go below 50 I bring them all in.
I hope all Hoyas like it cool. LOL Or at least wil tolerate it! I have mine in my sunroom that is very warm in the daytime IF it's sunny and very cool at night.
Diane, what do you mean by very cool? I'm thinking and hoping they don't mind @ 50 degrees but wouldn't want to chance them getting below that temp.
50 deg should be OK...there is a Temperature Tolerace thread...did you see it?
Eriostemmas, in the wild, climb trees and when they get into the sunlight, they bloom. Mine take full on sun...and bloom a lot.
GG - going over there now...
Oh, see I'm learning more and more. I had no idea any hoyas could take full sun! I figured they all liked bright light and filtered sun but thought full sun would fry them!
Oh Carol - I just googled Eriostemmas and came across your website!
Would you believe that 6 pointed H. cv.Mmonette (altho I think it IS cv. Isabella as it has not recurved) STILL LOOKS GOOD!!!! A bit more pale but she is holding up.
That H. obscura is beautiful, Gessiegal....foliage looks lovely!! Try the fragrance in the evening or early morning...VERY nice!
Carol
You PROS are so nice to those of us who are just starting to grow hoyas!!!
We love you for that!
gail
It is so easy to compliment anuyone on a gorgeous hoya. H. obscura happens to be one of my favorites....it is so......abundant and generous most of the time!!!!!
That is dynamite, Christina! Thanks!
Oooh, I just love that vitiensis bloom. I can't wait for mine to bloom..I got it just for the flowers (best looking flowers in my opinion - but I've only seem them in pics!).
Gail, nice obscura! And nice blooms.
I've had 2 obscura plants since Spring of last year, and both had peduncles. The smaller one lost them all, and the larger one still has them but hasn't bloomed yet. I heard obscura was an early bloomer, but I'm just sitting here looking at those peduncles and NOTHING is happening! I wonder why. The one with all the peduncles is made up of a whole bunch of unrooted cuttings that I received (several peduncles were on every single cutting when I got them) - I then rooted the cuttings but they never bloomed. The plant looks very healthy and leaves are growing, but no blooms. I'm at a loss - hopefully it'll bloom this Spring.
Gabi
Christina - those flowers look like porcelain flowers!! Very pretty!

Ever since Tapla (Al) gave his soil discussion on container gardening and Indoor Gardening and his discussion about fertilizer, I have been using a Miracle Grow 12-4-8 and everything is blooming. He says those fertilizers with such high phosphorous numbers can't be used by a plant.......not even possible.?????????
Christina- Don't know which color I like best on your vitiensis blooms! Both are so lovely!
Carol- 21 days? WOW Didn't realize they would last that long! Such a pretty pink too
The typical H. vitiensis flower is the purple one. I absolutely LOVE the color and the shape of the blooms.
Gabi...if you can give your obscura bright indirect light and lots of water....she may bloom.
Mine is hanging on the front screened in front porch with 6mil poly wrapped around the porch and does get indirect sun. I am shocked that so many things are blooming right now. I just looked out my bedroom door onto the porch and the hibiscus are even blooming.
Thanks Carol. I wish I wasn't already doing that, but I am. I just don't get why it's not blooming! Oh well, we all have our "difficult" hoyas.
A LOT has to do with light. As the days start getting longer and longer...we will see miracles!!!!!
So after all my recent complaining on this thread about my obscura not blooming (even though it has tons of peduncles), I just found a peduncle with buds on it!! I am so excited to smell those flowers! I will definitely post pics *when* they bloom (keep your fingers crossed for me that they won't blast!).
Gabi
