Even having such a mild type winter in comparison to our sisters and brothers, we seem to have gone to sleep for the winter. 78 posts in an entire week???? How can that be?
Today is Christmas Eve and obviously we are all involved with our family celebrations as it should be. Very soon we must get back together. Did you notice the North..something...
forum. My goodness, more than the entire group all together. Guess that is because everyone is snowed in with nothing to do but chat.
See you next year. Merry Christmas and Happy, happy New Year.
Christi
Oh dear, oh dear.
Yes, things are a little slow, although I am doing my best to keep it up.
Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you too.
Josephine.
I was thinking the same thing Christi! I think its just the Holidays. Luckily I found myself another Hosta group thats going strong and what they do is show loads and loads of pictures and their seedlings or what ever they are working on.. This is a group of professional hosta growers and breeders and some are famous hybridize rs, so I just read and show pictures and don't say very much. lol
Christi I still have your plants with your name on them :)
Sylvia, you are such a sweetheart. Hopefully, in the next few weeks I will be getting around more. Maybe come see you when you are free.
Just want you to know you are missed.

Bus kicks back in the 7th
I've been busy here at work, but have been lurking. I'm getting irritated by these folks that say cutting down a tree for Christmas is sad. Don't they know that most of those trees are planted just for Christmas?
What did y'all get for Christmas? I got 2 weedeaters and a $50 gift card to HighCountryGardens, among other non-garden related items.
I got an Electric skillet since I needed one and a portable green house and a new rose bush LOL
Heh. I got NOTHING garden-related. Can y'all believe that?
Well, not entirely true. I got a new digital camera with a better zoom. So now I can take better pictures of flowers and worms seeds and all that other strange stuff that only gardeners take pictures of.
:)
DW thought I was working too hard, so I got an electric tiller - now to find time to use it in the daylight - lol.
I heard that!
Well, I got a windbreaker, a warm pair if gloves, and a $50 card to walmart so i can buy potting soil to my heart's content, I think it's just great.
Josephine.
Hey, bb,
Got anything still growing or have the freezes wiped you out?
Looked at the garden yesterday - jalapeno leaves look a little worse for wear, but the cabbages, cilantro, parsley, and dill are doing fine. Tomatoes and basil in the garden are compost, now, but the ones on the patio are still OK.
Wonder how things will survive the next blast in a few days.

Went to the feed store yesterday and got 50#'s each, alfalfa pellets, dried molasses and corn meal...all for only $41.00. I thought it was a bargain but then again I don't know what it is supposed to cost anyway. They were out of Super Thrive. TJ, know anywhere to get it around here? We don't exchange birthday or Christmas gifts between DH and I. We pretty much help each other get whatever all year long. That is if it can be fit into the budget. Sounds like everybody did ok.
Bubba, everything that's not evergreen is died back, now. Radishes are a bit mushy on the older leaves but put on new growth every day. The tender plants are still hanging in there but I've been covering them on really cold nights. All my potted trees are in the garage along with some other plants I couldn't decide where I wanted to put.
Christi, I just called the Greenery and the have SuperThrive. Their number is 972-617-5459. I think it's about $10 per bottle.
Josephine, the Dwarf Indian Mallow I dug for the swap was looking dead at swap time, but I moved it into the garae with all the other plants and now it's putting on new growth. So, I need to get it to you.
Everyone with a pickup, the dairy by my house sells composted cow manure for $20 per FULL truck load. Can't beat that deal with a stick!
Manure here I come. who'd a though that would be a good thing.
Thanks for the tip on Super Thrive. Greenery is one of my favorite places.
T.J., thank you, whenever you have time will be fine.
Josephine.
Things look good here Bubba--no hard frost yet out on 'the prairie'--in fact, a few things are blooming.....
*pouting...whaaa whaaaa * LMAO... I don't' have a truck but then I am not near by either and it would probably cost me $20 in gas to drive over to get some ....just have to find a farmer who has some to get rid of near by...
and no don't say anyone that you will get some for me I am just pickin at y'all cause I am not close by
With all of the frost and cold today...maybe wait a little closer to Spring. D-mail the directions to the dairy, please. Thank you.
LouC
*giggles* LouC you say it is cold??????? ....this is just chilly now if it stayed like this during the day then it would be cold.
fresh manure will warm things up ...hehehehe
Okay now that I have teased ya since I am still all to familiar with COLD weather of Illinois
question for my very wise and smart Texan friends
how well would grapefruit grow in my area?
Per say I would plant them in large pots that could be taken inside the greenhouse or back room when it does frost out if they can't be grown outside year round.
My folks are in Mission for the month of January and my mom mentioned abut bringing me a couple of seedlings when they head back to Illinois.

I've been lurking as well....this past semester has been extremely stressful and I desperately needed a break. Got to spend some time at home with mom and dad....it was their first Texas Chistmas and it went very well. They still keep commenting on how warm it is outside compared to Ohio. I got some wonderful books to identify butterflies and birds and a printer to print out my digital photos, I am hoping to eventually make a scrapbook of my gardening. Right now I am having fun digging through seeds and potting up cuttings.
:) Kim
Hi, Kim. We have missed you. Hope you some time to enjoy yourself before it starts all over again. Quiet day here today. Resting.
I believe a grapefruit would do fine in a big pot for awhile so it could go back and forth...not sure how it would do, long term, but it is worth a try. I want to try the same thing with a Myers Lemon, and a Satsuma.
I've been lurking some too and watching for a spring Roundup thread. It's been one heck of a year for us. We expanded our business, built a new woodshop and hired a few people to help. We are used to doing everything ourselves, so having help around takes some getting used to.
I guess it's never too early to start thinking about a spring roundup. Helps get us through this cold weather when everything looks dead. Glad to hear from you Mary Lee!
You're right Kim about getting us through the cold days. It's so dreary sometimes and even when it's not I can't plant because I'm usually too busy at work. I used to get Sundays off, but I haven't a Sunday off since August. That will change when spring gets here.:)
