Supermarket Ginger

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi all, I had DH pick me up a couple of bulbs yesterday and hope that someone can give me some info on them. I was to plant them to see what I come up with, but I also need to know how deep, and so on. I will attach a pic to show you what I have and to see if you think it can be separated and made into more. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

i have done that before, and they don't need to be real deep at allfor mine, i put about a half inch to an inch of dirt over the top of them.water when dry and keep in sun. that is all i did to mine. this one is probably Z. oficinale

Well that sounds easy enough! How do you know so much about gardening to be so young, if you don't mind me asking? :)
Also, should I leave them whole, or break them apart into more than one? Thanks! :)

Mitsy, I did this last year and I cut the tubers up so that I had a few eyes for each pot. I covered them with about 3/4" of dirt and started watering. Keep them in shade when they start growing and keep them in a good sized pot because the tubers grow too. Mine died back when I brought them in a couple of months ago for the winter. One has started sprouting up again. Not sure if this is normal or not, just my experience.

Robynsnest, did you happen to get any blooms on yours, or do you just use them for food prep? I am excited to see what I will end up with, but I wanna know for sure what I am doing first! :)

A gentlemen in Florida started me on it last year and sent me the tuber. He told me I probably wouldn't ever get it to bloom unless I could keep it in a steady enviroment and that could take a couple of years. But I wasn't daunted by this and am still going to try, the folage is neat and reminds me of palms. I love to cook and use all the different herbs and spices, but I won't give up my plants to the pot. I will go and buy it already ground fresh.

I'll dmail you a little planting dirrection he sent me.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I wanted it for the plant, too, and haven't cooked with it as I can recall. I got part of a Dmail! :)

idk how i know all of this... i just picked it up along the way. this is my passion. that's the best reason i can think of...

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

well I think it is cool for a young pup like yourself to have such an interest and passion for something SOOOOOOOO good! :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

thanks my family has a history of gardenig, but no one has been into it as much as i have

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

dhs I for one am very glad that you like it so much, I'm hoping that my grand daughter like it as much as you do.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

it is a very good and healthy thing to be interested. in i hope she does too. we need more plant nerds like us! i would be nice to share the fun with plant buddies that are actually there if you know what i mean

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

My 5 year old daughter loves to garden! She is getting a Chia Pet-Tweety/Sylvester, for Christmas! Her favorite flower is Cosmos, so I am anxious for Spring so she can get them started! :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Mine bloomed the 2nd year, 4 hrs of sun or so per day. The bloom was like sparse yellow canna bloom.

Judy, that is way cool! I love Cannas, too! :)

right now my favorite would have to be plumerias

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I think the plumerias are just too beautiful for words!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

she's a beauty! I just love the colors of the plumerias!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

thanks me too... i'm trying to get all the varieties of colors...

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks Judy for letting us know about that bloom, maybe I'll see one this year.

DHS, I think you should get your parents to let you start a store and sell to all us newbies. Add advice to everything that you sell and we'll all be set.

i have thought about that, or something like that, but i think that i'll just give plants to my neighbor who owns the local S.C. Palm and Garden Center. she's said that i could work there over the summer

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

What a great summer job. How far are you from the NC border. My adopted son is stationed there and he said he would pick me up plants and send them to me.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

at the very bottom tip of SC about 30 mi from the Georgia border i think. i'm close to Savannah, Georgia, on the coast

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

HEY I know where Savannah is! I lived in Garden City only 30 miles away! And it DOES get cold there! LOL

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Cool area. I want to go there on vacation.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Downtown Savannah is gorgeous! The cobblestone streets are amazing!

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I need to get off here and fix dinner. I wonder if anyone would think I'm crazy if I went to the supermarket via Georgia, SC and picked up some tropicals along the way.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Go for it, but be sure to grab enough for me, too! Hey, my Dad and his GF live in Cali, I need to ask her to send me some!

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Do you need a ride to the market?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

YEPPERS! Come get me, it will be a blast! :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

As a native and loyal south carolinian, i'd have to reccommend Charleston for cobblestone streets and beauty, but that is just me. is Graden City in SC or GA? isn't it near Edisto?iy y'all ever come down to these parts, holler at me on DG and we could meet up or something, and i could show you some of our tropical wonders (on Hilton Head)!
Robynznest, if anyone thinks you are crazy to come all the way down here, then they are obviously not a plant nerd like us.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Garden City is in Georgia, but don't ask me which direction it is from you as I am directionally dyslexic! LOL
Plant Nerds! LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh ok... lol

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

First time I ever called a nerd and liked it. lol

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

What a coincidence- I just bought ginger today and thought about planting the little side nubs that don't seem worth trying to peel and mince up for cooking. And here's a thread on it! Thanks !
diehard- I also would encourage you with plants. I hope you enjoy working at the Garden Center. I know a young man who had bonsais as a teenager and is now a landscape architect.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Glad it was of help in your deciding then Sally! :) Always worth a shot I suppose. :) Mine isn't doing a thing so far, but not giving up hope just yet!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Maybe one of you might help me. I have a white blooming ginger and it has bloomed several times. I brought it in the winter and it bloomed its heart out, but it is in my solar room and on sunny days gets sund allll day long. Here lately the leaves are turning crispy brown. Is that from too much sun, not enough water, or ?

This is my one and only ginger alto I love it. The smell was amazing!

Thanks a head of time.
