Forgive my dumbness...

Does the size of a Brugmansia seed determine the size of the flower... or anything else, for that matter? The seeds come in such an array of sizes. I just wondered if that was significant of anything.

a big seed.. that it came from a big healthy plant.. and was .fresh.. but you're looking to relate it to a type or particular plant..

That is not dumbness Teresa!! When you are trying to learn, there is no such thing as a dumb question... it is only dumb not to ask!

I don't know about bloom size, etc... but I think it's Versi seeds are the smallest..

This is the first year I put the seed size in my notes when I planted them.. so it will take a season to see if big seeds make big blooms!

I did learn by keeping notes last year that 3 cots will make a 3 pronged Y. So maby this year we will learn that big fat seeds make a big double bloom! :)

Okay.. time for the experienced growers to come in!

ZZ has it right. The seed size varies by species. They go from Versicolor(very small) to Arborea(very large)with the others falling somewhere in between.

What do you mean "I did learn by keeping notes last year that 3 cots will make a 3 pronged Y", My brain isn't catching this one.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

"Cots" is short for cotyledons.. the first leaves to emerge from the seed... When a seed germinates and comes up with 3 Cots.. they Y will have 3 branches like an upside down peace symbol rather than a Y.

Here is a pic of a seedling that had a "3 pronged Y" Notice the Y is not just a Y.. there are 3 branches coming from the trunk.. they were all equal in size and came out at the same time. I see on the tag it says "3 cots" and that's how I found out. :)

Now I understand, thanks. I didn't know that would happen. So now you can have the three with blooms on it.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yep. Really it doesn't make all that much difference in a mature plant, but it was interesting to find out..

DG is the best place to learn all these little things, you don't find that kind of stuff in books.

Seed size does not make a difference in the size of the bloom or anything else. The larger seeds may have received more nutrients than the smaller ones. But I would think that the larger seeds might have more vigor when germinating.

Thanks for everyone's input.

That's interesting ZZ. I'll have to look out for that.
