Opinions on a second dog...

Circle Pines, MN(Zone 4b)

I started a thread about getting Mish a sister from a rescue, but I haven't heard back. So I thought I would take this opportunity to get some opinions on whether I should even think about a second dog. I have 5 cats, and Mish. Everyone is pretty happy and well adjusted, but I do think Mish gets lonely for canine companionship - he goes crazy whenever he sees another dog and wants to play sooo badly.

Money is not a problem, and neither is room. I have a big house and a third of an acre fenced yard. Love is definitely not a problem - plenty of that in this house, too!

But Mish does have a bit of separation anxiety. Unfortunately he can even be destructive. My DB only works sporadically because it is seasonal, and when he is gone sometimes Mish is good and sometimes he is not. For example, he was down in the basement today wrapping presents for half an hour and out for about 45 minutes, and during that time Mish decided to chew up my bluetooth headset. We have toothmarks on the doornob and scratches on the woodwork by the front door. And unless we completely puppy-proof the house, there will always be risks because he seems to like to destroy the most expensive thing he can find.

Will a second dog help with this, or will it just amplify the problem? I am very interested in anyone in a similar situation as me who decided on a second dog, and what the results were.

Thanks!
