Thank-you Yuska.
Anyone have an idea of HOW to pick a fruit tree if you want good tasting fruit? I'd hate to baby a tree along only to find the fruit is sub-par....
Contacted someone on Dave's at a nursery but never got any word back.
The Fruit Tree sale on the 19th only sells trees that do well in this area. The free class on Jan 5 and 12 talks about how to select a tree. Below is the class description -
"This class is for anyone who wants to plant fruit trees in their yard and intends to purchase them at the Urban Harvest fruit tree sale on January 19, 2008. There will be a presentation with pictures of every fruit variety that will be available at the sale. In addition, there will be discussion on how to plant, prune and care for the trees.
This exciting presentation is always filled with the exact information you need to prepare for the sale, and to help you decide what you want to purchase, where you will plant it in your landscape, and how you will care for your trees. "
There is also a list of varieties on the Urban Harvest website and information about each.

Thank-you so much Lynne!
What is the address/location trees can be picked from?
Fort Bend County Master Gardeners also have a fruit tree sale every Feb. Very, very popular event. Plant material is provided by Heidy Sheesley of Treesearch Farms, a great supporter of master gardener organizations in the greater Houston area.

I buy a little somethin, somethin every year and have never been disappointed with fruit quality. All items offered are meant to be grown successfully in this area, including a couple of apple varieties. She also provides a pre-sale lecture, describing the diff. varieties, which is a tremendous help in making your selections.
This year I'm considering an avocado. Had my heart set on a mango but DH hates that fruit and has exercised his veto power, sigh.
LOL on the mango! OHHH.
DH would like pomegranite or fig but given our space our top picks are citrus.

8th Annual Fruit Tree Sale & Environmental Fair
Saturday January 19, 2008
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Location: Emerson Unitarian Church, 1900 Bering Dr.,
West of Loop 610 between Westheimer and San Felipe.
A price list and plant variety list on on the Urban Harvest website. Like the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners, plant material is provided by Treesearch Farms. Be there early - there is usually quite a line, but the line moves fast and there seems to always be something for everyone.
Treesearch Farms....is that where Smockette works?
