I NEED CAT GROOMING ADVICE!

Columbus, OH(Zone 6a)

As you can see, Pooka has grown up to be a huge, fluffy boy! But along with the fluff has come - Yuck! - mats.

He has developed mats twice now, both times under his forelegs, in his "armpits". The first one was small and I managed to cut most of it out with scissors, but this next one is getting bigger and bigger! I managed to snip a small piece from it, but I'm so afraid I'll cut his skin. Darby's mat comb won't even make a dent in it.

Any grooming advice from fellow fluff kitties? Is there a smaller mat cutter I can use, or a special brush? Also, what causes these mats to start? Is it something getting caught in the fur?

Last question is; do dog groomers do cats, too? Pook is pretty gentle, but I would think grooming any cat would include some kind of "hazard pay". :)
