Velvet Ant, Cow Killer (Dasymutilla occidentalis)
I was just wondering, why does this "velvet ant" have wings? It looks more like some kind of wasp.
Even though it is called velvet ant and the female looks like a big hairy ant because she has no wings, it is actually a wasp. This is a pict of the male who has wings. The male looks like a wasp, yet does not sting. The female looks like a big ant and has a very painful sting (hence the common name COW KILLER).
