I went to our local library today to see what they had on butterfly books and hummingbird books. They only had a few which I checked out. The newest one was published in 1994. The other two were from the '80's. I am thinking of donating a couple of books to this library. Does anyone know of any newer and more local books that I can offer the library?
Thanks,
Chuck
So Cal Butterfly and Hummingbird Books
Chuck,
I purchased "The Life Cycles of Butterflies - From Egg to Maturity, a Visual Guide to 23 Common Garden Butterflies" by Judy Burris and Wayne Richards and donated that to the school library where my sister-in-law works. They created a butterfly garden last year and I figured it was a good choice to keep students interested.
It is an excellent book for adults and the photos and text are easily understandable for young students too. It was published in 2006. I highly recommend it for any library.
I'd also suggest a few books on butterfly gardening like:
Butterfly Gardening for the South by Geyaa Ajilvsgi
Butterfly Gardening - Creating Summer Magic in your Garden by Xerces Society/Smithsonian Institution
...and perhaps some books on caterpillars - that way folks won't think all caterpillars are destructive chow hounds. Folks will learn about what larval hosts are and hopefully plant them to bring in butterflies.
Caterpillars in the Field & Garden - Thomas J. Allen, Jim P. Brock & Jeffrey Glassberg
Caterpillars of Eastern North America - David Wagner
...there are so many good books out there...so any of the die hard field guides would help too.
