Supermarket Bulbs?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi all, I was wondering if any of you have experimented with Supermarket bulbs? I read somewhere on here that someone bought a bulb/tuber? that was sold as edible, but planted it to get an Elephant Ear. So, I was wondering how many bulbs/tubers that could be purchased at the Grocery Store for growing plants. I have used a garlic bulb already and it is doing great, and would love to experiment with more to see what I can get. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated! Thanks

potatoes, onions, tomatoes??(grocery store tomatoes taste like ---- though!lol!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL :) I think I am gonna try some ginger and others that will grow 'purdy' plants. :)
I may try the onions, though, cause my garlic is doing very well! :)

i would think it might be rather expensive buying the "seeds" from the supermarket though. You might look in the spice section for seeds. lol!

I have thrown away so many seeds from things I could have planted it ain't even funny! :) I will have to build a whole nother green house for my experiments! LOL

DH got me some horseradish and some ginger yesterday, so I will be trying them to see if I can get anything! :)

I've grown Jerusalem artichokes and ginger from supermarket tubers.

Sweet potatoes, celariac, shallots, taro, jicama, all have sprouted for me, most unintentionally :)

Those are good to know! Merry Christmas!

I have had a beautiful avocado tree grown from a supermarket avocado for many years, until it became too large for my house and had to give it away.. Every year there are coming up young avocado trees from the pits I'm throwing in my garden. Last year they made it all through the mild winter.
But this year, after a couple of nights with frost they gave up..

Wouldn't it be just too cool to have an avocado tree here in Podunk Missouri! LOL
We are getting ready to add on to my green house, then I will have more room for experiments! :)

Anyone have any success stories yet? I don't have any yet, but sure hope to in the near future! I keep waiting to see if the ginger is gonna pop up, but nuttin so far. I forgot about the horseradish in the garage, better check on that tomorrow! MY BAD! LOL

I tried growing an avocado tree from a supermarket avocado pit and it grew to be about a foot high - then croaked when the first frost hit also. They don't seem to like things too hot or too cold. I wonder if they'll produce fruit if kept in the house year round?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I am sure someone will come along that can answer that question for you. Sorry I can't, though!

My dad grew an avocado inside in Connecticut. Got to be over 12 feet tall. Rather spindley but a nice ornamental. He had a coffee bush in front of it. Neither produced anything.

Gent, Belgium(Zone 8a)

I've heard from a Brazilian friend that one needs a male and a female for it to produce fruits.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

i have heard that it can take up to 7 years for an avocado grown from a "pit" to produce fruit. dont know if that is accurate or not.

Thanks Tammie....WOW is right that ginger took it's time for crying out loud!! Did the horseradish do anything? :)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Nope, the horseradish hasn't done a thing! And I was about to give up on that ginger, too!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Well have started an Avocado from pip, it's the Florida variety, but I read that they grow to about 40ft
now I am only 5 ft so if it gets any fruit any time I might get a bit stuck to pick them! But the Florida ones are rather large fruits, and tasty. But I don't think I can wait 7 years!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL You will need a mighty tall ladder to get those fruit outa the tree! :)
