Do I plant the stem deeper to get stronger?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a begonia foliosa that I have had since she was a baby. The main stem is not big enough or strong enough to support all her foliage. I am afraid to just plant deeper. What do i do, please?

Here is a piece of my iron, yes.... iron, to support the main stem and keep it from breaking from the weight of the foliage.

Hi Gail, your flowers are always beautiful! But I would love to know what the one to the left is in the first pic, cause I want one! :)

I turned the lights back on and put her on the shelf so you can see. Her name is 'Baby Dress'. You can get her from Lyndon Lyons or someone said i think that Kartuz has her also. She is so easy to grow.

Oh she is a BEAUTY! And I see your pretty little cup and saucer in the background! :) Thanks for the pic of her, and the info! :)

If no one gives you a better option, you could cut it and send it to me.......I'd love to have one like that.

I've never put supports on begonias. I like the way they look cascading over the pots. The only one that I ever did let grow pretty tall was an Angel-wing Begonia. It was pretty thick and was able to support it's self.

Gessie,

It looks like you have 3 ways to go on your foliosa - stake it, let it alone (either it will break under its own weight or get stronger from supporting the extra weight), or cut it and start the cutting in another pot (or the same pot). I don't think I would plant it any deeper. Pinching should encourage it to put out more growth.

B. 'Baby Dress' has been one of the harder ones for me. I think I am on my 3rd one and it is doing great so far. This time I just let it in its original pot from Rob's Violets to see if it would fill the pot out before moving it up. In the past I tried terrariums to watch it slowly decline and die.

My BAby Dress is still in its 21/2" container getting bigger every day. I agree on most shipped plants. I let mine stay in its original container for at least a couple of weeks (although it has been longer on my picture above)

I guess I will trim back the foliosa and see if it will branch some more and I won't leave that support under it.....we shall see what happens.....thanks
