Gilmer, TX

Nancy, I would be interested in the red cleome, crimson pincushion, and purple lilac. I have pink cleome and pink pincushions. I also have white moon flowers and will soon have purple moon flower seeds. They were slow bloomers this year but are coming on strong now. These are seeds, not plants as you requested but have had almost a 100% success rate with them. Let me know if you are interested. I also have other things.

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Hi!

I'm in NW Florida (Zone 8b), so I'm not sure what will transfer to grow in both zones.

But I have both a Japanese Maple and a healthy full-size Gardenia in my yard. I don't have a clue how to root a viable cutting, and have never seen seeds on either. If you, or others could tell me how to do either of these, I would be happy to send you either or both. I also don't know if my cultivars will grow in your zone.

Let me know if you're interested and have information for propagation/seeds.

Perhaps other members will know how this is done. I would love to be able to propagate/collect viable seeds on these two.

Judith

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Judith, take a look and maybe post these questions on the propagation forum and saving seeds forum. I'm sure there will be people who look on there who will be able to help you.

Good Luck, Oh yes, and welcome to Dave's Garden from Ft Lauderdale!!!!!

Judith,

I don't know about Japanese Maple, but gardenia cuttings root very easily, it just takes a long time.

What works best for me is I cut a bunch of stems, pull the leaves off the cut end and stuff them all in a big plastic cup of water. I find that just one or two cuttings in a cup doesn't have a good chance. They seem to like company.

The cup sits on an outside windowsill, facing east (so they get light, not heat). Then I ignore them for about a month. If the leaves don't turn brown in the first week or so, you are good to go. After a month, I look for roots and add more water if they need it. I like to wait until they have secondary roots before I plant or trade them, but they might do ok with only primary roots.

After they get their secondary roots I put them in pots of dirt, water it well and don't give 'em any special treatment after that. I haven't lost one yet.

I'd wait until after the bloom to take cuttings, tho (bloom time is sooooo close!). You would be cutting off potential blooms. But it's up to you. DD took some cutting just a couple weeks ago, and they are doing fine.

Good luck!

Thanks lots for the warm welcome and info!

This sounds like fun, trying to root the gardenias. I have a HUGE plant, so I really don't need more myself. But I would love to trade/give away viable cuttings. I enjoy mine so much! The aroma is to DIE FOR!!!!

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

I feel the same way about mine ... I love it, but I don't need more. The ones I root are for gifts and trade.

BTW, welcome!

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

I root my this way..I wait till they bloom than cut the bloom with a 6 to 8" stem I plant it in a pot water it good and cover with a clear glass jar .this takes about a month to 6 weeks take the glass off and gently pull on the plant if there is resistence than it is well rooted.leave the cover off if there is no resistence put the jar back on and try again in a couple of weeks..works 100% of the time. This is the way my grandmother showed me many years ago.

Selah, WA(Zone 6a)
