Hi, I just noticed I have a few plants (babies taken from a mother plant) that have a fine looking white powder on their leaves. It seems like these specific babies are the only ones who have it.
Is this common or are they in trouble? Can it contaminate the others? I sure hope this isn't powdery mildew. I don't know if AV's can get that? If you know, please tell me.
White powder of my AV leaves, is this bad??
Could be powdery mildew which grows in cool, moist places with little air circulation. Too high humidity, poor air circulation, and temperatures that are warmer during the day and cooler at night all contribute to this condition. Are they placed close to each other? You should separate them from your other plants, allowing them a good air space around each plant. I know people who have used Lysol Antibacterial Spray on the leaves; if you do use this method hold the can a good distance from the plant and spray lightly; then use a fan to dry the leaves quickly. Others have used dry baking soda applied to the leaves and then brushed it off, which takes most of the mildew with it. Personally, I isolate the plant to an area where temperatures remain as consistent as possible and air circulation is good, remove the affected leaves, and spray with Neem Oil. This method works well for me. Hope this helps.
Thank you barbaratoo, I really appreciate your help. Yes the plants are close together right now. I will seperate them and do as you advise. I think I will try all three ideas on different plants and see which one works best. Always good to learn!! Thanks again!
I think if you take an old makeup brush it will come off I have done that a few and some of it comes off It also could happen from water on the leaves I think I had the same thing and I also use a few drops dish soap and the rest water and spray dirt I am not very good but I thought I just throw in my 2 cents hope all gos well

Powdery Mildew won't kill anything but it is ugly. I use a fungicide bought at any nursery and spray whenever I see it.....it won't affect blooms, etc. but you want to spray when you know the plant won't be sitting under lights still wet from the fungicide.
good luck
Hi,
I wanted to let anyone know who may be interested that the Lysol worked for the powder mildew on the african violets. I even sprayed the ones with flowers and buds and they were fine. All look healthy. It started coming back about a month later and I sprayed those again. All gone.
Thank you so much barbaratoo
Oh, I must have missed this thread back in December! Thanks for updating your thread, so now I too know that Lysol can be used on plants! Never would have thought you could use it for that purpose!
Now I have been looking for liquid lysol and can't find any. I can' remember if there is a mix of water and lysol or straight lysol? Does anyone know.
Oh, I would just by the cans of Lysol spray and use that ... I KNOW if I have to mix something it would never get done!
I was told it had to be the liquid kind. Let me find where I read that, Lin............think it was on another site...
Lin, I found it but it said you would lose your blooms.....I think I will stick to the picture I posted of the 3-in1 fungicide that i buy at the store. It won't hurt the blooms. Let me find the picture I posted not long ago.
I can't find it but it hasn't been more than two weeks ago that I posted a picture of the bottle.
i found the thread

LOL Gail ... I have that same Fungicide! I also use the Garden Safe Insect Spray!
It is good stuff on my gessies and doesn't bother the flowers at all...........it kind of gives the leaves a shine, too (LOL)
i bought the concentrate and the ready mixed one and have used almost half of the concentrate. I don't know why we have powdery mildew so bad...
Hi,
I just used the Lysol in the can. Spread the plants out and sprayed. I didn't soak them with it, just a nice cover. After the second application it never came back. The AV's stayed healthy, didn't lose flowers either. It has been over 6 months and today I noticed a few blossoms on one plant with a touch of mildew. (I have about 30) I will keep an I on it and if it spreads I will spray again.
Does anyone know if the lysol will work for strep leaves too? I noticed 2 streps downstairs with a tad of powdery mildew thismorning...would like to get rid of it fast..lol...
Whatever works for avs should work fine for streps. I get powdery mildew all the time but I use something I just buy at the garden store called Garden Safe Fungicide 3 made by Schultz. You can buy it mixed already to go. I bought one mixed and when I had used it up I bought the concentrate and now I just mix my own.
Thanks Gail..going to check at Walmart and see if they carry it....
They do here as that is where I got mine...........Lowe's also carries..........
Great..thanks gail : )
