I live in snowy MN. I have multiple bird feeders (all types) around my yard. I have two primary feeding areas complete with heated bird baths and feed safflower, suet, thistle, peanuts and a "cardinal blend" with safflower, peanuts and black oil sunflower seeds. Last summer we built a deck near one of my feeding areas-I put a birdbath and platform feeder on the deck railing near a big window and it has been so much fun to watch and take photos because the birds and squirrels are so close-my grandkids love it (me too!). Originally I used my regular cardinal blend in the feeder but the hulls were pretty messy on the deck. I now have a hulless mix I got at Wild Birds Unlimited but it has cracked corn in it and nothing in my yard will eat the corn so now it's ending up on the deck. It's really not hard to sweep it off, but I would rather have something with less waste-does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking of trying plain shelled sunflower bits-what do you think?
Thanks for any suggestions!
Deb
Hull-less mix recommendations, please
Hi Deb, Using sunflower seeds (no shell) is a great idea as all birds enjoy that.
There are no waste mixes.you could check in the meantime at places like Petsmart etc. and it will say whether or not it has corn included in the ingredients.
I was at one time making a mix if my own of Sunflower Seeds (no shells) and
Peanut bits. It just depends on your budget but the best base of it all it the hulless sunflower. You will still see pieces of them around but it least it won't be the black shells.
Hope this helped. Pelle
Thanks, Pelle. Sunflower is always a safe choice-maye I'll go aheat and give it a try with a few peanuts mixed in for the blue jays!
Here is a bag I bought yesterday but haven't put it out yet so don't know if the birds will like it. It has a very small amount of cracked corn but as you can probably see there's not much. I wanted to try it on my patio so I didn't have all the seeds laying around. The mixture consists of: white millet, black oil sunflower, cracked corn, canary seed and red millet. I will post and let you know if the birds like it and if they leave anything laying around.
