Fabulous picture, Gabrielle. Witch hazels are truly one of the great sentinels of spring for the upper midwest tundra.

Which brings me to my question: if you took this in April 2007, then you most likely have a great photo of one of the Hamamelis x intermedia selections of witch hazel. These wonderful plants bloom during mid/late winter to early spring, as do the Hamamelis vernalis types which usually have more orange in their flower colors. If there is a typo on the date, then that's easy enought to resolve.

Common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a fall blooming large shrub/small tree, and will be flowering from October into December depending on how far north or south it is growing.

If this plant was labeled Hamamelis virginiana in the botanical garden, then they need some assistance in their plant ID. Your other image submitted for common witch hazel (blooming in late November 2007) would be the real McCoy.

It's the same plant and photos were taken the same day. I was copy/pasting the location from another photo, and forgot to correct the date. It's fixed now. Thanks for catching that.

All good-looking pictures need the good labels; thanks for contributing.

I look forward to seeing more woody plants from that collection, especially viburnums!
