Flea and Tick control for goat

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

I just bought a young goat and would like to know what I should use to control fleas and ticks. Is the medications for dogs (Frontline, etc.) safe for goats too?

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

I really don't know about any of the flea and tick controls for dogs or cats. But you can use DE on it's coat(be careful as it isn't good for the lungs), keep clean bedding, check for ticks and remove when found. You probably have more problems than I do up here as it gets good and cold killing off these pests for the winter.
Try to find a vet in your area which deals with goats;however they aren't always easy to find. I also listed hoeggers in another thread and these people are very experienced with goats and may be able to help you more. www.hoeggergoatsupply.com
Good luck and have fun with your new goat!

i have been looking for that web site, thanks Sue!

One of my dogs just had a bad local reaction to Frontline--he developed a huge crusty lump at least an inch high between his shoulder blades. It has taken several days to go down and there is a sore where it was. The breed (Akbash) is known to be sensitive to anesthesia and other chemicals--but I have never seen this reaction on any of my other dogs.

I would be very careful using it on goats--I think they also tend to be chemically sensitive. Tell us what you are doing escambiaguy and tf, okay?

i honestly haven't had to use anything on my goats, even qwhen they slept with puppies!

My mom used to buy the garlic tablets at the health store when I was little. She would feed them to the dog to help keep the fleas away. However she(the dog!) did get little whiffy but it kept the fleas away.
I used to feed my goats garlic when they weren't milking(this would definitely affect the taste!).

That garlic thing sounds really good if you can do it. It's selenium rich which most goats really need anyway...

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

We've never had our soil tested for the selenium. But the goats always did well, so I'm assuming the level was good. Gosh I miss those goats!!

A friend of mine very nearly lost her dog by putting Frontline on her. She had used it for a long time, and the last time she did, the dog finally had a reaction -- it had been building up for a long time. I'm talking brink of death. The vet said he'd had at least 3 fatalities from Frontline. It IS poison. I've changed back to Advantage -- the Frontline did not seem to be working anymore, and then when Kim's dog nearly died... scary. I know the Advantage is a poison as well, but I plan to use it this summer and then really get in with the diatomaceous earth and hope to control the fleas that way. NOT worth it!
