Tall evegreen shrub for part sun (to replace ixora)

Houston, TX

Hi,

I am in Houston, 8b I believe..

I plan to pull out 4 ixoras that were planted by my landscaper last summer. They looked nice for about a month but they just don't get enough sun to thrive and they really started to thin out. And I also cannot see them doing well at all in our rare but occasional freezes. I want to put in a few firespike, which I think will do better in the dabbled sun (there is a queen palm shading the area lightly). I am also looking for something evergreen to put in with the firespike because I assume they will die back each winter. Any suggestion? Flowering is great, but interesting evergreen foliage is nice as well. Thanks!

Hi Bohnnco ~ I haven't seen you posting before so will start by a warm welcome to DG and Texas gardening.

I suspect alot of the Houston area DGrs are busy with the holidays coming up. I hope some one will offer better suggestions than I can. The only plant that pops into my mind is Camellia and I am sure that is because it tis the season. They are a pretty evergreen but how tall could they be?

The more I think about it osmanthus (tea olive) might work well http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1450/
They can certainly get tall 15ft.

The other shade links are for ground covers, perennials, and annuals. Here is the major link that contains multiple links to other threads regarding shade gardening.
