Indoor pond?

Lick Creek, IL(Zone 6b)

I have an old watering tank we used for the cows when I was a kid. It's made from a galvanized boiler cut in half, 24 inch high and 30' diameter. I'm thinking about painting the inside with some Rustoleum exterior metal paint (deep blue). As much as anything I want the sound of running/falling water in my sunroom. I also figured I'd put some kind of water plants in it.. maybe some walmart goldfish. Since I have no idea what I'm doing, maybe some of you could advise me as to just how stupid an idea this is or not. I thought about using some kind of liner for the thing but I don't know where to get such a small piece and I sure don't want to waste money on a big chunk and not use most of it. Should I just invest in a cheap sound effects CD and save myself the grief?

If you paint the inside, I don't think you will keep plants or fish, I would think it would kill both. Bev

I wondered about that. I guess I could just use it as is, it held water for the cows for a lot of years.

Thank you for replying. I need all the help I can get with these new projects I'm starting...cabin fever will have to work a little harder to get me this year. Steve

For years I kept a 1/2 whiskey barrel in my sun room with fish and a few plants and a pump with a waterfall down copper leaves. Everything did great. I would take water out and water my plants and refill with my "well water" from the tap. (I don't have a cholrine problem). This year I have put a kiddy pool, and 2 whiskey barrels in a different garden building (not attached to my house) and it is doing fine. But it is producing alot more humidity than the one lone whiskey barrell did, to the point of windows sweating. So the only concern I would have is producing too much humidity.

Joyce, thanks for the information. I'm counting on the humidity to counter some of the dry air in the house from my woodstove. The tank will hold about 60 or so gallons and should be enough for a few plants and fish. I'm going to go ahead and paint the thing with the rustoleum paint, since this is a learning experience I'll figure out whether or not the paint kills anything. Glad to hear your project worked out well. Next thing to figure out is the pump/waterfall thingie and maybe a filter? It's all fun and my 14 year old son is gonna be captain of the fish so its a family project. It will be sitting where the red chair is now and pretty much surrounded by plants.

I would be surprised if the paint hurt the plants. I also would be surprised if the paint didn't hurt the fish. I haven't used a filter in mine at all.

Good luck with your project.
Joyce
