I just bought some bulbs of these anemone (or are they rhizomes?). Upon opening the package, I examined them to try to determine which end should be planted up. They are wrinkled little things that do not appear to have an 'up" or I just don't know how to recognize it. Any tips on how to plant them? Thanks.
Planting anemone coronaria
Some sources say to plant them on their side and they will right themselves, and that seemed to work for me. Its often recommended to soak the tubers overnight in room temperature water before planting. I've found it sometimes a bit easier to tell where the top is after soaking. Nasty looking little things aren't they? Look kinda like boogers to me, lol.
I had a bowl of A. blanda whachamadoodles on the counter recently, and DH gave them the ol' hairy eyeball, looking at them as if they might be something dredged out of the litter box... I didn't bother to soak those, since they were calling for good soaking rains soon after I was planning to plant them. I planted them last year without soaking, and all was well... can't vouch for A. coronaria, but I think that if you get good fall rains they should be fine with or without soaking too.
Well we sure had soaking rains today. As I live in the Northwest, there is no problem with getting enough rainfall in the wintertime. I may soak some of them overnight just to see what they look like then, hopefully better than the "litter box" appearance LOL. Thanks for your help.
