Which brugmansias are the most cold tolerant?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

please tell me which brug might live outside in my 8a/cusp of 7b garden. i would love to hear from people with hot summers in zone 7, if there are any, about which brugs do well in their areas. i have had no luck at all. i do know some people that live in about the same zone as i in miss. that grow some varieties outside and they return year after year.

I have seen both B. aurea 'Goldenes Kornett', but also B. arborea and B. sanguinea take a bit of frost without being damaged. They are the most cold hardy Brugmansia that I can think of. If you are in 7b - 8 there is a good chance that they will come back, if you cut them down to the ground, just before frost and then cover the area around them with 1-2 outdoors insulation matts, or a wheelburrow of straw, which you first remove again in the spring, when the danger of night frost has passed. I had a few that came back that way. Also, several years ago I covered three rows of Datura wrightii (perennial Datura) with straw and they came back from the roots the following spring.

mamajack, I use the plant hardiness info in the PlantFiles. When you some spare time go through and check the individual files. Some varieties have loads of information posted about them. You should be able to come up with a few names. Mine are in pots.

That whole sanguinea-arborea-vulcanicola group are called the montane species becuase they're more cold tolerant as a group.
Both sangs and arboreas laugh at light frosts, especially if they are under an overhang. I've seen arborea happily blooming away outside under an overhang a full month before our guaranteed last frost date in the spring. :)

and i would so love sanguinea but it so hates texas. lol. and i am especially ignorant about these plants. if i were requesting one on the plant trading forum what would i ask for? aurea goldenes kornet and arborea? does anyone know if these can take the heat of texas?

and bettydee, i love the plant files but they are often wrong on plant hardiness i have found. i have found some brugs off daves that state hardiness as zone 8. i tried charles grimaldi...it died with the cold. sanguinea and earth angel died in the heat so never made it to the cold.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

B sanguinea didn't like the heat. I started off the year with 5 seedlings. Four died almost over night. The fifth struggled for a short while. Then it too died. Ohhh, your poor Earth Angel!!! It took me so long to buy a small plant this fall. I hope I don't lose it next summer. Thanks for the heads up on plant hardiness listed in PlantFiles.

bettydee, did you buy earth angel?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, I did. From Seed Sprout.

you may have better luck with earth angel. i got mine last summer...hellishly hot and dry. i think if i had gotten it this year it would have done so much better.

Most of the German Brugs seem to take more Cold Paul

Try Taylor Dawn. Last year, I made the mistake of believing the weatherman when he said that we wouldn't go below freezing one night. The cloud cover blew away, and it got down to 25 at my house. I went from over 60 named cultivars to 16, and lost more seedlings than I can count. Taylor Dawn lost the top half, but came back and was the only one to bloom this summer! I watered, but didn't fertilize, and now she has buds in the basement, too!

We had two nights in November last year where it got down to 14 F. We lost all the cutting we had cut and put in bucket, in the barn, no heat. But as far as the ones planted in the ground, almost all of them came back. We may of lost five or six out of 70. We figure if they can't take the Winters here we don't need to be growing them. I think some were just weak plants to begin with. We left Adeline, our new double pink and she came up and made a tree. Planting in the ground is just the only way to go for us.
