In April I wanted to see what pea gravel wood do so I put some on a couple of plants The first picture is in July and the 2nd one was yesterday not bad still look good
Update on my plants( AV) with Pea Gravel
Are they growing totally in pea gravel or just as a soil cover?
Just as a soil cover. Other plants I have put real moss from trees and rocks they are doing pretty good also

I don't know but my hunch is that spaghnum moss you buy at the nursery (wet it in a bucket with water first) would work much better than pebbles if you really need to keep moisture in.
I am confused, though............if you wick your plants over water they don't need extra humidity but, if you don't wick your plants, why wouldn't you have your plants sitting on pebbles with water in it to build up humidity? I don't understand the purpose of putting pebbles on top of soil with African Violets.
Remember I am only into African Violets for less than a year, but I have never seen anyone put pebbles on top of the soil on an av or any of its cousins, etc.
I know people use pea gravel outdoors in the garden as mulch but I've never known anyone to use it for indoor houseplants other than cactus. I did use it on a couple of cactus plants years ago. I'm not sure if there is a purpose except that it may be aesthetically pleasing to the eye for some folks. I don't think I would use it because of the weight it adds to the pots and that it might hold too much water around the base and stems of some plants.
The only thing I use pea gravel/pebbles for nowadays is for draingage in a terrarium.
I think your right Lin, maybe just for looks. It does look attractive with the pea gravel topping the plants...
