Help! It's very cold; too late to plant bulbs?

Racine, WI(Zone 5b)

While I can still get a shovel in the ground here in southeastern Wisconsin a couple of miles west of Lake Michigan (Z5b), nighttime temps are in the 20's though daytime are above freezing, though not by a lot -- 41 yesterday, 38 today. I still have bulbs -- mostly daffodils and Oriental lillies but some tulips -- that I've not been able to plant until now. Is it safe to go ahead, and, if not, what do I do with the bulbs to save them -- if not planted now, then when? I am adding lots of compost and processed manure to the soil and covering the beds with about four inches of mulch. I'd really be grateful for your advice.

It you can dig the hole or use an electric auger, you can plant. I have planted in Vt during a January Thaw and they did just fine. I am always planting well into Dec. I think Lilies need to be planted asap or stored in a cool, but not freezing space (unheated basement) and planted in the spring Patti

Thanks, Patti. You said what I wanted to hear. If your bulbs can prosper after being planted in a Vermont December, surely in our much milder climate they should do as well -- if the Wisconsin gardner does her stuff correctly. So now I'll don the triple layers and take spade and auger to the garden. Even though the thermometer says 28, the wind is nasty. I'll take comfort that the sun is shining. Thanks again, Barbara
