How far down should I cut my Brugs back?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm in zone 8 with Brugs planted in the ground (my first year). Most are as tall as me and some are over 6'. Since a few nights of low temperatures nipped them, they are leafless. The branches are a whitest color and look like dead wood. Should I saw the trunk down to the ground?

Thanks!
Deborah

Thanks, Anita. They happen to be your brugs you gave me as cuttings last fall. LOL

LMBO, I had no clue, I am so happy they did well for you;)

Hey, Deborah!

I cut mine down to anywhere between 1-3' from the ground. Wow, my brugs have been gone for a while- quite a difference between North and south Georgia!

I would also mulch the ones you are leaving in the ground and pull the mulch well back in the Spring after your last frost date. This will help warm up the soil, as the brugs will not start sending up shoots til it is fairly warm. I found out the hard way this past Spring but I also have heavy clay soil! some of my brugs did not emerge until late May!

Good luck!

That's a big help, Brenda. I didn't know what to do. Will they grow back from the nub that will be left standing?

They may grow back in your zone but if they freeze hard, all growth above the ground is a goner and you brugs will grow back next Spring from the rootball, from the ground.

Good deal. I think I may put a bucket over the nub-trunk then mulch really heavy.

Deb,
next year will you post PICS please? I would like to see what my babys can do in another zone:)

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Better than that, I can do it now! Be back in a moment!

I've truly enjoyed your cuttings, Anita. Thank you so much for sending them last year. I just can't explain the satisfaction and enjoyment I have had growing these. You sent canes of Frosty Pink, Dr, Suess and an ins gold to me in Oct '06. I can hardly believe they grew so quickly into tall beautiful blooming trees.

I planted your babies in two gardens, Dr. Suess is in my workshop bed planted in a row with others that I received from blckwolf 256 and Karoke. The ins gold and Pink Frosty are in the garden in a row next to my sunroom window.

I have about 10 pictures to share, although I may not bore everyone with my poor photography by the time I start posting them.
