Waning moon...

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Just trying to keep this forum going! I transplanted a couple of rose bushes, a dwarf pomegranate, and some blueberry bushes when the moon was right, and they are thriving -- doing much better than they were before the transplant. I don't know whether I have records of exactly when I first planted them; I'll look and see when I get home. It would give credence to the gardening-by-the-moon idea. Anyone have a story to share?

It's getting cold here finally (though it's supposed to get near 80 over the weekend) and my roses seem to be loving it. I'm looking forward to cold, cold February evenings, when I can curl up with hot cocoa and some seed catalogs... making a planting calendar... deciding what goes where! I figure between the almanac for the moon and "Roses Love Garlic" I can have a whale of a garden by next year.

Do you know what sign of the moon is good for rooting cuttings? I have never been able to find it.

Sorry to be so late replying -- I've been home sick. (Well, just very tired, really.) I don't have the info here with me but I'll try and remember to get it for tomorrow.

good question about the right timing on the moon for rooting cuttings, does anyone know? I'm in the learning stage of all this!

Pisces ~ good for root growth- plant-transplant - irrigation
Libra ~ plant flower, vines, herb & cuttings

What's a Dark Moon?

A dark moon is a 'new moon'... when the moon is not visible (doesn't reflect any light). That is on Feb. 6th here.

I always get confused as to which is waxing and which is waning.

Any tips on how to remember which is which ?

We just finished having a beautiful full moon....maybe last week,
so now are we waxing or waning ?

I planted some potatoes today................before I thought to check on the status of the moon. I hope they will do ok.

But........ on the other hand, I also planted some spinach and lettuce too. Surely it's the right time for one of them :-))

Think of waxing as putting layers on (getting bigger). Waning... is the other one! And it's waning now. (If I were talking out loud I'd say be sure and take your umbwella.)

I remember it by remembering a phrase from books I read as a youngster... when a man was wooing a woman with pretty words (or a politician trying to empress someone) he was said to be "waxing eloquently"... Or, think of cleaning your can and "adding" wax...

Hence, a waxing moon is growing, not diminishing.

Wax means to grow or become
From the new moon, which is basically no visible moon at all, until the size of the moon becomes full.
From pitch dark to full the moon is waxing (growing lighter and appearing larger)

Waning means to be diminished; to decrease, which is confusing because the waning moon beings the day after the moon reaches it's fullest light. The beautiful full moon will diminishes each day until it disappears totally - it's waning.
