Hello! I am sending "Richard Wallace" canna tubers (trade) to a newbie DGer in Texas and he is wondering if they could be planted now in his area. Obviously, I have to lift mine in the Fall so am "somewhat" ignorant of your growing season/conditions. Would it be "safe" for him to plant these now?
Thank you so much for any help...
Jan...who is looking forward to Spring and it isn't even Winter...yet :(
Growing Cannas in Texas...
A lot would depend on which area of Texas your friend lives, but I think that in Texas Cannas can be planted in the fall and left in the ground with a good cover of mulch.
If you would like to learn more, here is an article written by one of our members that tells you all about it.

Thank you Josephine! He lives in San Antonio. I will forward the link to him!

Cannas can be planted now, but best to wait for spring. They can stay in ground all the way up to Northern Oklahoma with no issues...
Not so mitch. We get a good one once in a while. I lost all mine a few years back. Even froze the pipe in my walls.
Really ? - My grandparents in Tulsa have had them in ground for 20 some years and never had an issue. They are well on the 6/7 border. My Inlaws in Tulsa to grow them and they have been at the house from the time it was built in the 40s. Maybe they get used to it?
I mulch them heavy now.
Maybe that is it - they let the stems, leaves and everything stay right there and fall on them.
One of the biggest growers is there in OK too right? Horn
Planning on moving some of mine when we go - so I want to be ready for anything.
GO????? where?????
Oklahoma City.... in June
You will have to start a round up there. I would come.
Well... you are the only OK DGer I know. I have tried the forum they are grouped with and well... I did not care for it so much.
Thats because it is in MO. LOL
We Okies are sort of attached to Texas.
TexOma
I know... I know.. MO is soooooooooooo strange next to OK, I went to college there for my first 2 years.
I was born in Lawton, Esther was born in OKC. My family all lives in Tulsa and Falfa, her family in OKC and Taloga.
Mitch! You are MOVING?
Yes I am moving in June.
And just as we found each other's gardens and families. His wife and son are such great people. Just like Mitch. I already miss him and he isn't gone yet.
Christi
I have told him he can't move, we need him here.
Maybe if we put concrete in his boots...
I hope you are going for a super paying job, or another very good reason. I haven't seen your yard except in pictures, maybe I can get over before June. Hey, you will need to have a "pot'em up party" like we did for Sylvia. I hope you will continue to come down for our RU, etc. after moving off. You and Ted can start a "Red River RU" in that area!
You will definately be missed;I know the short time you quit posting last year, I felt the void. You are a special gardener and friend.
Ummm Yard is gone - everything was moved up to my inlaws place this fall or brought to school or given away...
Thank all of you for the support... the job will pay much less, but it will be worth it. To be were you know you need to be is worth it.
That is why I am working soooo hard on the school garden - want to get it to a point it is easy to run and keep up before I leave. So I am making it mostly trees and shrubs - all in the hopes that I will be able to get them to do better with less small plants to worry about...
I have been the fortunate recipient of many of Mitch's treasured babies. I feel so blessed and hope that I can take care of them properly. None of us *owns* plants, we are only allowed to enjoy their company. Mitch has been told over and over that I will be a concientous custodian but they are his to move at any time. By the time he is re-established perhaps they will have multiplied and we will each have a share. He has been my mentor as his knowledge goes far and wide in many areas.
Christi
Yes, Mitch has been a dear friend and it has been great to be able to share and learn together.
I guess we will just have to visit back and forth once in a while when he moves.
Josephine.
I will try to make the Round Ups too...
Hope you do, you will be truly missed. I didn't realize this was in the planning so long ago. Glad you got some of your great treasured plants up at the inlaws already. I bet they are loving the extra landscaping work. When spring comes you can find those others that need moved. I think before I left, I would be very tempted to spread bad weed seed over the fence of the neighbor that was so upset by your natives. (I don't hold grudges, I get even!)
hahaha. Come on over, Sheila, I can take you directly to the right place. wwooo,,,evil, daring,,,
LOL!
Lol - wish you would... they have the Hank Hill lawn..
ROFLOL!!!
:-)
Saddly this one will too once I get the last few plants moved up to school...
Mitch, you need to be sure to let us know when the garden's oficial opening ceremonies will take place, so we can come and rejoice with you.
Josephine.
I am going to try - there is - like everything in a public place - a lot of red tape to getting it donw but I would like to make it a fun little day.
Well, whatever you can do, be sure to let us know.
I will - I mgiht just have a private tour!
