We got hit pretty hard earlier in the week with some very low nighttime temperatures. I I had to laugh when I saw a couple clematis blooms out in the garden - not quite ready to open. We'll see who wins: the flowers or the weather.
Charging up the battery for pics later today.
RTP - give us more, so that we can remember what Summer was....

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

wow, everything has changed in just a few short days - lots of frost this morning.... my laptop exploded, so I haven't checked in for a couple of days. I'll try to brave some more pics in the cold soon. Did your clematis bloom?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

No - it is ready to pop, though. But with the weather as it is (low 30's) I doubt I'll be seeing any flowers until next year.
I had to laugh - the Penstemons are little toughies. Even last week when the flowers froze, they thawed out later in the day & kept on going!
When I mad the rounds yesterday, there were several things still flowering: one of my Ceanothus is at it again, Daphne 'Lawrence Crocker', 4 of the Clems had buds or 1 flower, Roses - the Floribundas are ready to open, Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' still going strong. Of course this is one plant that really doesn't care about temps - it bloomed all winter long, even through that December snow...
Some of the Echinaceas are sporting tiny flowers, Lobelia laxiflora, Salvias - flowers are small but prolific. And the big surprise was one of my Rhodys - put out 2 clusters of tiny flowers. Weird...

WWWaahhhhh! I don't have anything blooming right now, I don't think. Although maybe some low campanula. But i don't think so. Nasty weather. simply nasty right now.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Until the weather change this evening, I still had a Penstemon, "Purple Bedder" with a few blooms, along with one remaining Callibrachoa and some Pineapple Sage. Oh, yes, and a fairly large orange mum and maybe a couple Nicotiana Perfume Deep Purple, and yes, a few campanula. But, these are all the little straggler blooms, very bittersweet to see them (except the mum). For some reason, I've also got a scape on my Princess Bride Iris. I know I should cut it off, but I hate to do it. I was thinking I might take a few pictures but I didn't get back home before rain and dark.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

When I left to come back into London, I had Zauschneria, Shizostylus, Roses, and several penstemons.

I'll check to see when I get home on Friday - nice idea to check, so easy to over look the late ones.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

It is easy to overlook at this time of year, I take a quick look thru the front when I walk the girls to the bus stop in the morning. The penstemon are still hanging on here as well. I think the clem flower is frozen! Now that its warmer and rainy today we'll see what happens.

Hi,

Here's my Pineapple Sage. It is still bringing in hummingbirds every day! I love it!

So that's where my Hummers went!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

that is such a vibrant red - perfect for this time of year!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

And it smells so yummy too!

EP, Your blooms are nicer than mine. I don't think mine liked the winds last week. How big is your pineapple sage? Did you have any trouble overwintering it? I brought mine inside last year but don't have space this year (It grew a LOT!)

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi Susybell,

I only got my Pinapple Sage this spring, so it has not overwintered yet. It's probably between 4-5 feet tall. I am growing it in a container, it was probably in too much shade most of the season, and then in October I moved to a sunny spot right up against the wall of the house where it has some protection and shelter. I hope it will overwinter OK, because I don't have the space for it indoors.

My husband took a bunch of cuttings from it, because now that we found the Hummers like it, we want more of it!! Hopefully the cuttings will take.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, pineapple sage cuttings are easy! You won't have any problem with that. I should probably do that as well. Maybe I'll also try tucking mine into a corner and see if it makes it.

ahem, just in case anyone has room - Brent & Beckys bulbs is having a sale.

Ack! I had to go and place an order. But I'm thinking that some of the things I wanted could actually be sold out because I can't believe they have that many good things left at this time of the seaon.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I've been eyeing a few things. But, I think their inventory system is good. Something in my shopping cart changed to sold out when I refreshed, and then didn't show in the product listing anymore. How much was the shipping? I saw the notice about 3-day select to "out west" but couldn't find out how much that would be.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

I ordered a couple of weeks ago, and didn't think the 3 day select was unreasonable..... shoot, they have some nice things left, I may look thru their inventory .

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I e-mailed them yesterday to ask how much the 3 day select shipping would be, but I have not received an answer yet. I don't know if it is based on weight, total price, size of package, or what. Redtootsie, how much did the shipping turn out to be on your order? I'm afraid to place an order not knowing if I might be hit with a big bill.

Maureyhill, the 3day select is based on weight of the order. I got a confirmation email and all of the things I ordered were, apparently, in stock. Yikes! But I am totally jazzed about the belladonna lilies! I have wanted those pink ones for so long!! Plus, the martegon lilies - I can't believe it! Thanks for posting about the sale, Redtootsiepop. So my kids will get a few less things for Christmas... so what?

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Pixy, not to be nosy, but how much did the extra shipping turn out to be on about how much weight? Also, is it still ok to plant crocus, daffodils, alliums and anemone this late? I must be crazy, but all those beautiful pictures on the website got me dreaming.

I don't know yet how much the shipping is going to be. I'm hoping that the invoice I received is the final version. I think it is. I ordered 150$ worth of bulbs for 75$, and the shipping was 23$. That's pretty hefty percentage wise in terms of the dollar amount of the order, but I got things I really wanted and got an excellent price for them, so I still saved money.
No, it's definitely not too late to plant.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi Pixy, I read that they calculate the basic shipping based on the amount of the purchase before the 50% discount is applied. Then the 3 day select would be on top of that, I guess. I went to the UPS site to try to get some info on prices, but it was a pretty confusing site and I didn't solve the puzzle. However, as you say, the prices are great, so if you get things you especially want, it is worth it. Since I made my wish list yesterday, a few things disappeared from my cart, and are no longer on the sale list, so I think they are updating frequently, so people won't order things that aren't available.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

This will sound like a bad excuse, but my cat ate the packing slip. hee hee, I'm not joking, when I was planting the bulbs, Tiger got all crazy and grabbed the shipping list and started tearing it up - I told him "I wanted to keep that!" but he just put his ears back and kept tearing it up .

So, I'm just saying the shipping was reasonable because it wasn't a shocking enough amount to remember. Sorry, I'm full of excuses !!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmm, can he be trained to do that for other things, like Nordstrom receipts before DH finds them? That could come in handy.... ;)

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh, fantastic suggestion susybell, I'll just get him all crazed up on catnip and throw the balled up receipts at him. (Tiger, not my husband : )

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Still laughing!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Ok, I went ahead and did it. My bank account is now $83 dollars lighter, and I still don't know what the extra shipping will be. I have been writing report cards all day, and needed a self-comforting break. Actually, my kids are doing pretty good...a factor of having a nice small class size of 18 rather than my usual 23. Nonetheless, the disorganization I discovered (read old snack material) inside some desks when hunting down their math books and journals was a bit yucky. I don't do very well with making them do desk clean-out, because I'm always on th the next project...just like at home in the yard. Sorry, rambling here in the middle of the night...must get to bed.
As for DH and price of bulbs: Whenever I plant something, he asks, "Can you eat it?" since he considers my ornamentals to be fairly worthless. Among other things, I ordered 15 camas bulbs, which were a food source for the Northwest Native American tribes, so I can safely say, "Yes" to this question.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

nice - what grade level do you teach ?

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

And don't forget - the Georgians did eat some of the tulip bulbs, although I do think that was mostly by accident: apparently during the period of tulipimania (17 and 18th C) bulbs were given as hugely prized gifts - but in some cases the non-gardeners just thought they were potato type foods, had them cooked, and thought 'what was all the fuss' - considering they were trading for the equivalent of 1000's of pounds, quite possibly the most expensive meals ever eaten.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

I thought eating tulip bulbs would make you sick!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Maybe what made them sick was realizing they just ate something worth 1000's of pounds, guilders, or whatever...I'd probably choke up and turn green if that happened to me, too... Voles & squirrels certainly have no trouble eating mine!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

My dog loves it when I bury things in the yard. He rejoices that I am finally acting like a decent dog and normal member of the pack.
Voles...uh oh. I have a community of those who enjoy my pumpkin patch immensely. I hope they do not begin feasting on my bulbs now that the pumpkins are all harvested and in the shed.
Redtootsiepop, I teach first grade, so it as exciting time of year as they really start being able to read (simple sentences and stories, of course, but a breakthrough nonetheless). A portion of the bulbs I ordered are going in our class garden next week. I got some baby moon daffodils (4-6 inch tinies) that will be really cute and yellow Grand Cru lilies, blue queen Fabiola, and red tulips with variegated leaves.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh that is so nice, I had a teacher (6th grade) who kept a full greenhouse and we all helped garden a large area in the middle of the school.... I loved it.

I have a daughter in first grade right now, (and one in fifth, and a son in preschool) - reading is an enormous breakthrough .... to be followed with lots of questions... "why is that restaurant called "Jiggles, thats a silly name"? tee hee hee
