iPod Search questions

I am looking into buying an iPod Search in order to download photos to show to others. I won't be using it for music. If I understand correctly, I will need to move my selected photos into some software that I will download from Apple. Then I move that folder to the iPod. Is this correct? Is there any way to download photos directly to the iPod from my camera? I feel like a dinosaur when it comes to anything beyond my computer and my digital camera...
