Huston to Buffalo roadside questions

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Hey hey
got your attention??? good LOL
I drove to Tomball today to pickup the youngest step son and bring him back for turkey day and on the way back we come up 1774 and along the road at some houses I saw a plant I thought was very interesting..no I didn't' get pics I was driving...but to describe it ...It reminds me of the top of a pineapple the way the leaves spread out ...it must be a succulent though some type of cactus? one I saw looked like it might have lil needles or spikes that go around the edges but the "leaves" looked smooth....what is it I want one LOL

I saw most of them after I passed the renaissance festival grounds if that helps anyone that lives around there.
Then after we got on 90 to head towards 45 there was a garden along the road and it had a sign that said Organic Garden....does that belong to any one here on DG?????...If so I thought of you when I went past thinking I wonder if it was a DGers place. LOL

Probably everybody's got their heads in the ovens about now. Or cuttin pie shells or such. Janet, UniqueDesigns just went to the Festival. Bet she can help you. The two you describe are familiar to me but I don't know the names either. Have never checked to see if there is a cactus forum. Are you doing turkey. We will be cooking at MIL for Friday.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Agave or yucca? Just a guess though.

Yes, there is a cactus and succulent forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/succulents/all/ . Perhaps they can help too.

:) Kim.....who's glad mom is cooking this year!

not yucca I have that these are big they remind me of a pineapple top..wide at the bottom then goes narrow

I've been home since 3:30 then went to store and got everything for tomorrow hadn't had a chance to go before then and I have pumpkin pies pecan pie (step son shelled 4 cups for me) have the cheese ball made, the celery and onions chopped and sauted and bread dried and tore up for dressing...turkey is thawing so it will be ready to go in the roaster early in the am.
not making alot since it will be hubby, step son and I for lunch then my daughter and BF will be here for supper so we will do ham and cinnamon apples and veggies for dinner ...more snackie then a big meal since they are doing lunch with his family.

Hey BRONC!!
YEAH ..that looks like it might be it ..does it grow taller????
it was last weds on my way back from Huston so as to how tall it was I don't recall but that looks like it

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

That would be an agave, they seem to be common in Texas and get rather large.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

This one is agave parryi and it only grows to about 2ft x 2ft, but there are some species that grow much taller and wider. Some folks call them century plants because they take years to bloom, but it's amazing when they do. My dad calls them Spanish dagger and they can be very dangerous.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is a picture of one that grew close to where i work, it was amazing.

I can't wait 'til mine does that!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

cool I still think I need to get one for my yard ...LOL
great pic frost
Bronc why are they dangerous???? something in the leaves?

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

They are very sharp and very strong. If a person were to fall on one they would likely be seriously injured. Getting off of one would be even more painful because the spines on the edges are like downward facing hooks.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ohhhhh ouch that sure would hurt ...mmmmm ...have to think on where I would put one then so that wouldn't' happen

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

We had one when we lived in Florida...I somehow managed to impale my arm, on one of those daggers/bayonets...and I am here to tell you..it HURT! It was more than 35 years ago, and the memory, makes me wince.

worse then a small scorpion????

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Phyllis, are you saying you have been stung by a scorpion recently? You are certainly in place where they thrive.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I have never been stung by a scorpion, but I have been stung by a yellowjacket and it was close to that...

oh yeah thought I told ya about it...took the step son back to Austin labor day monday and that night when I went to bed lucky me it was on my side of the bed ...just below the right shoulder blade ..not fair hubby was already in bed sleeping but I woke him up when I I started saying a few choice words but I did not cry LOL
