Oh my... This is just beyond stunning. How does this pic have no comments? Possibly the finest Mammillaria I've ever seen.

Mammillarias are pretty easy to grow and there are literally hundreds of amazing specimens in southern California at the Huntington or at shows there or nearby. One gets sort of overwhelmed by all the amazing plants sometimes.

Yeah, I have a few dozen Mamm's... But I'm always a sucker for ones that are straight-spined, yellow-spined (e.g. M. celsiana), multi-trunked/columnar in habit, and heavily tomentose. This one fits all of those criteria, hence my euphoria. This specimen rivals or surpasses my favorite Mamm, M. dixanthocentron (long-spined form), with the added bonus of being multi-trunked. And the backlighting in the pic is perfect... really makes the spines glow and shows perfect spination.
Well, thanks for all your great pics, and maybe you can get another one of this beauty in a few years, especially while it's in bloom...

One last question: I've heard some people gripe on message boards about Huntington plants (cacti/succulents in particular) often being mislabeled. Do you find this to be the case?

no more so than any other collection of plants, and perhaps even less than the average botanical garden or private collection. But no garden is free of errors (and a LOT usually)
